I havn't been on here much recently, due to lots of reasons! My season is now finished (as always not as successful as I would have hoped) and I'm having a gap year to event. Sadly as much of the idea of competing 10 horses from home for a year appeals to me it aint gonna happen!

So, I woant to go on a yard for a year. Ideally be able to ride some horses, who knows maybe compete, and progress with my horses. Anyone have any recomendations? I dont really care where I go to be honest, I want something exciting and fun and I'm prepared to put in lots of work.

Ideas and thoughts please!

Many Thanks guys

Bill Levett has a very good reputation for treating his WPs well. If I was in the position again to go and be a WP, I'd contact him first, definitely. Otherwise, Ruth Edge... I've seen her at a comp being so calm and nice (when a groom or wp had put totally the wrong bridle on a horse, and most people would probably have shown some annoyance!), plus she's a brilliant rider.
I'm sure you'd learn absolutely tons at the Freddo's but I hear it's expensive.

Bill is lovely but I don't think you are allowed to take your own horse, could be wrong though. His WP's usually seem to be given a horse to event up to PN while they are there and all bills for the horse are paid and it's replaced if goes lame etc.

Depends what you want to get out of it but I would imagine you'll be wanting to compete quite a lot and probably above PN?

I think Lucy Wiegersma's WPs get decent opportunities to compete - lots were running at their own event, and they tend to send a few lorryloads to Winkleigh as well. They definitely accept own horses as well - it's a massive yard. Think Suzanna Hext was one for a while (with her own string), Sophie Stones rings a bell, and I think a some have had rides on Lucy's "retired" advanced horses like In The Purple and Quite Nice as schoolmasters.

Kerelli- Ruth is having Duncan for six weeks over the winter before I crack on with him again . She thinks a lot of him and works wonders but sadly does not have space for me and its just not feasble to keep travelling back and forth of lessons!

I think I'm going to contact Lucy 'Weigermeister' as mum called her and also Kitty King, and I might try Bill as well. Ideally i'll be eventing at N/CCI*/Int but who knows with horses!

Keep the recomendations coming if you can!

I was going to say Lucy W. They are such a massive yard that there is loads of opportunity to learn lots especially with Caroline onsite as well. I have several friends who has been and done it and all have learnt lots and their riding seems to have gone up another level.

Polly Stockton. She is lovely to work for, has some lovely horses and is fun. You will almost certainly get the chance to compete some youngsters if she hasn't already found a 'rider' WP for next season.

Would second (or third!) Lucy providing you are prepared to work hard. Good opputunities to learn and train with one of the best trainers. Also loads of different horses to ride including starting 3 year olds to experienced campaigners. Can give you contact details and more info if you pm me.

Thanks for all the suggestions-as mentioned Bill wont allow a horse, but I am going for a trial at Lucy's!

Great news!! probably one of the best places to go in the UK. If you can stick it out it will be the making of you- the Wiegers have produced so many top level young riders as well as the horses!

Lucy W is looking for someone. Many have gone on to do well, like Austin O'Connor, Aaron Millar, Jade Lazenby etc. Caroline has trained over a dozen people who have made Junior and /or Young Rider teams, including this years only junior medal winner Tim Rogers. So give her a try.
