Ever bought an ex-racehorse from the track?

Yes I did.

I bought a just turned 4 year old unsucessfull flat racer straight from the track.

She had literally raced a season, been turned away, re backed and sold to me.

Unfortunately after 3 and a half years of me owning her she was PTS.

However I would do it again, it is so rewarding getting a horse and starting it from scratch and for me, TB's are such genuine horses and once they understand what you mean are so eager to please. Once my little ex racer understood what a contact was we were doing leg yield, shoulder in, travers, turn on the forehand, the odd step of halfpass and she picked it up asif she had done it all her life! Very clever little mare. She got me hooked on TB's!

Even my current one now is a TB x ;)

ETA: Mine was advertised on the Isle of Man Classifieds :D

We got ours through a friend who knows the owner. He was retiring the horse age 5 as he was useless at his job, and we went to see him at the trainers before getting him. We paid £1 and a crate of claret :D

Yup I have 4 straight from the track,. I cheated though. 3 of them I rode work on so knew them inside out before I took them home. All had sucessful careers, one retired sound the other 3 retired due to injury which I have brought them back from.

They have been the best horses I have ever had! In fact they have been the only horses I have ever had as I have always have natives.

Got my latest boy a week after his last run and he is fab!! :D
Trainer was recommended to me as being completely honest about his horses and he was :D

Yes! I completely admit I was one of those idiots who did it on a whim after loosing my long long term first pony.
He healed the heartbreak! And have given me years of worry, terror and enjoyment!
He last raced the week before I went to see him and he was delivered the week after.
He was 6 and just hadn't won in a very long time so the owners wanted something better. He's taught me so much, we have good times and bad times still but all in all he's 11 now and really calmed down and chilled out a bit!
I won't ever do it again tbh but at the same time he's kinda lusheous!

My TB was straight off the track, he was a very good racehorse and retired sound. I turned him away for a year then started training on the ground then rebacked him and schooled him from there... he is AMAZING and one of the best horses I have ever had, he is so loving and affectionate. I am so lucky to have him and it would break my heart to have to sell him.

Yes my current TB mare was directly from the trainer. I was lucky in that she had been turned away on the side of a remote fell for 4-5 months before I got her, so despite being extremely thin she was fine. Unfortunately she has masses of leg problems, but I make sure that her workload is suitable for her conditions which suits me fine as I'm not an avid rider. I absolutely adore this horse and although she tests my confidence sometimes I feel like I have a wonderful bond with her and she will stay with me til the end.

Yes. I work rode him for a summer between jobs and fell in love with him - see my previous threads about the buglet! I didn't want another horse but I made sure everyone at yard knew he had a home with me if it ever went wrong. I visited him every other week for 8 months and when it wasn't going well on the track his owner offered him to me. Couldn't afford him but moved heaven and earth to manage it, sold all spare tack. I love him. Simples.

Yep when i was 16 my mum brought a 8 yo straight from the trainer , he had been pin fired but was sound and he turned out to be a super hack not at all spooky or wizzy and the only time you would ever know he had been raced was when you said GO then omg :D

Mine came out of ascot sales 3 months after his last race, he had just started training again after a spring break and clearly was fairly useless lol :) love him to bits though and he learns so quickly!

My girl was never raced but brought over from ireland and sold last summer at the ascot sales to the lady who I bought her from a month ago!
She is 4 and she was brought on last summer and then turned away last winter. I bought her pretty much from the field! She is so LAZY at the moment, very unfit and very green but we are only two weeks into her work so I will let her off. I love her to bits though she is incredibly affectionate and you can sit under her belly and she won't bat an eyelid :)
My instructor told me that everyone she works with who has ex-racers are hooked on TB's! I don't what it is about them but I am well and truly head over heels.
I watch my friend with her 8 year old ex-racer who is working in a beautiful outline and does some stunning flatwork and I think yep me and dizzy can be there in a couple of years!
