Ever had your horse outgrow you?

Basically since I've last posted George has come on in leaps and bounds (literally)

We went to Hickstead and he did really well (pulled in 10th out of 24 in the pro HW hunter class)
He's did a good standard ODE with Mike and despite getting eliminated in the SJ (Mike fell off!) they let him go XC and he was a star.

We've recently been to camp and here's a pic and a vid :

well the bad news is, about 5 weeks ago now he bronced me off in the field and I totally shattered my foot (spring grass/him feeling rather well and a disagreement with my spurs!) :

Anyway, he's 8 next month and as we've had him from a just backed 3 year old he's blossomed into a wonderful big horse. He and Mike are total kindred spirits and a joy to watch together. I on the other hand have increasingly begun to feel like a pea on a mountain

We've worked had to keep him sharp and athletic and I don't want to stifle his spirit but a conclusion I'm coming to is a that a sharp/fit/strong George is rather too much horse for Sam...

Has anyone else ever been through something similar?

I bought a 3 year old before the one i've got now. She was a belgium warmblood and about 16.2hh. I didn't think she would grow so big, she ended up at least 17.hh and i'm only just over 5'2''. Got on fine with her until she reached 5 year old. Then she started to get the better with me and was just too full of herself. So i thought the best thing to do for both of us was to sell her. And now i have a 16.1 gelding and when he starts to act up i can cope with him.
 
Sorry to hear about your foot - OUCH!!

I bought a 16.2 warmblood as a 5 year old and he definitely grew in the year I had him, probably only an inch height wise, but really filled out and became strong. I decided to part with him because he could be a bit of a git when he wanted to be and I just didn't have the strength to get the better of him at times. He was definitely more of a man's ride. I'm so glad I sold him when I did before it became a real issue.

The thing is, he RARELY acts up. He's a treasure really but it's just he's SOOO wide and generally all horse that I feel a bit insignificant. Also jumping him makes me feel like a rag doll! He loves it and really uses himself but I just don't absorb it all very well

I miss my share mare really for XC, she was big but nothing like G.

Arh he looks lovely. I bought a 4 year old and now he is 5 and 16.2 already, he feels too big for me. Not just in height but overall he's filled out, into a lovely big lad. I am considering selling him at the minute.

He's lovely!! Sorry to hear about your foot - that's not good! I have a similar problem at the moment, I bought my 3 yr old as a foal and breeder said 16hh max. I've obviously fed her far too well as she's now a smidge of 16.2hh, is warmblood and will grow on and fill out for a couple of years yet. I'm about to start backing her but can forsee a serious battle of wills on the horizon!

Good luck with sorting your foot (and your horse) out. Do you think you'll get something else just for you?

I suppose I'm lucky that the fact Mike (hubby) shares him means I dont have to sell him for him to be happy.

I think unless they get silly wide the height isn't such an issue. My share mare was 17.1 and Dragon (the bay in my sig) my friend's horse I ride is 17hh but they don't make me feel like G.

I know how you feel look at me with floss I have a very very nice horse but with out bianca to keep her under the thumb she would be far too much horse for me to cope with on my own and probably kill me.

Its a tough one as george is such a fab horse...cant you make mike buy you a nice little dressage horse and leave him to all the xc on george?

The one consolation is that I know it will be much easier to find a 2nd horse for me than it would be to start shopping for one to carry Mike and do what he likes doing

Doesnt't hurt to start researching does it? You know the boat I'm in and I deffo can't buy until next year but I'm still researching now, looking at what I can get for my money etc...worth looking round and if you find the perfect someone then thats a bonus and if not you've got a good base when you do start properly looking.

Having sat on G.....He's definatly MASSIVE...I only walked a bit but felt like a 4yo sat up there!
 
I had a loan horse that outgrew me mentally - he was only 15.3 but had so much attitude I was very happy to send him back

Lovely horse!

I have similar worries but it will be a few years before mine is really a problem - my yearling is currently standing at 14.3hh!

Really don't want him to make more than 17hh - too much horse for me!
 
Hi Sam, nice to have an update on you and George! I bought an 2yo Irish Draught gelding a few months ago. He is a total star, but everyone on the yard keeps telling me he is going to be 17.2hh... I think he'll only make 16.3hh but I've got about 3 years to wait and see!! I'll PM you a piccy if you like.

Youknow you could buy a 4yo 16.2hh TB type mare....teach it to be a stressage pony and jump her a bit then sell her to me next July to buy a Lusto
