I am wondering if any of you have kept a horse thet you were not 100% happy with longer than you should ?

What were yor reasons?

thinking you can work it out?
Guilt?
Not feeling you gave it enough of a chance?
Thinking it may be You and not the horse?

Yeah, I kept one for 3 years that what complete and utter rubbish. Went through up's and downs and kept threatening to sell and then one day made my mind up and did it. Best decision I ever made.

Yep, and for all the reasons you just stated.

He was my first horse and I just didn't want to give up on him, but he never would have done the job I bought him for, so I had to let go in the end.

Yes!! Worst thing that I ever did.

I had a 16.2hh Hunter and we just didn't get on - neither of us were at fault - just wasn't meant to be. I kept him for 2 years and ended up totally losing my nerve.

Selling him to my friend who gets on with him was the best thing i ever did.

I have spooks now how has given me my confidence back and I couldn't be happier!

Are you asking because you are going through the same or just out of interest?

Yep, kept one for two years who I should have got shot of after 2 weeks! Every so often she'd give me a glimmer of genius, then we'd be back to square one. I made every excuse under the sun for her, and spent a fortune. Eventually rehomed her, best thing I ever did!

I still have the bad habits riding now which I developed with her in order to stay alive, wish I'd never gone down that road. Except the horse I have now is a complete star and was not for sale until the week after I decided to get shot of the mare, so everything does happen for a reason!

Yes - he was a bit of a rescue and far bigger than I would normally choose to ride. He is still with me, every now again I strap on oxygen tanks and climb the ladder on to him

and pootle about. Waste really, but his owner couldn't keep him and could never have him back so he stays and will do until he falls off his legs.

Yes, because I got into the mindset of better the devil you know. They also do things that make you love them again perfectly timed for the day before you are going to put the advert in.

Me at the moment, I am selling and riding, got people lined up for this Friday, sat and sunday hoping one lot will want her. She's behaving nicely since I advertised and seems to be coming round I keep thinking .. "why is she being nice now?" Have only had her since early June though, so not too long.

Yes bought him as a three yr old choice of two -non horsey mom liked him best so i have the pleasure of reminding her of the fact for the last 22 years!LOL! seriously although he is one of the family now and i love him to bits he ruined my confidence for jumping and should have gone a long time ago.

Yup!!! 3 years later I still have him - he has been away and come back and I just pulled my finger out and figured out how to ride him!! Like my instructor says - if I can figure him out and get him to work then the perfect horse will be a doddle when it turns up

Plus I like a challenge of sorts. I had a perfect horse once, but as much as I loved her she got a bit boring.

Yes I had one who was very talented but could be a complete s&*t when he wasn't in the mood, which unfortunately was quite often! He scared the cr&p out of me to begin with as he would rear and nap and bolt (in the school in the dark, not fun) but I persevered with him as I thought it was just a teenage phase he was going through. In the end I kept him for 2 years mainly because he was great XC, but in the end I was in tears almost every time I rode him because he just made me so angry pratting about; riding just wasn't fun any more, so decided it was time to sell him. Now I have Missie who is so sweet and easy-going I wonder why I kept him so long!!

Yes I kept one for 13 years longer than I should have....because I bred the numbskull. I only sold him because I emigrated.

Over here I definitely have a few "cripples" that I should get rid of - and one day I likely will.

[/ QUOTE ] Absolutely me, totally the Wrong horse, but she was very pretty. She was too big/strong for me. Sold her at the end of the hunting season to a hunting home where, by all accounts, she did rather well.
