I have a full bred Appy, I'm still getting to know her but she is very different to any other horse I've had. She's very brave, inquisitive but also opinionated. I really have to ask not tell! She's also wonderfully sweet and beautifully behaved on the ground.
We have lots of work to do but I think we're going to get on well, she's the kind of horse that you work with, not work:)...If that makes sense?
What are yours like?

I have one who is just colouring out at age 14! She is my second appy, this one is registered full bred, the previous one was not registered, but was a loud leopard spot. They are clever, opinionated, full of fun and with a highly developed sense of humour :D My two are/were both very affectionate, and tend to consider that they own 'their person', or in fact their people  The Old Appy made it very clear that she wanted me to ride her, sis could ride her, but she was not happy if I rode another horse. The current girl is not as bad about me riding other horses, but she does get jealous. The old Appy once grabbed a welsh pony we had, by the back of the neck and dragged her up the fence line, when the pony was put back in the field, having been ridden by me  This was not normal for the Appy as she was never otherwise aggressive with other horses.
The current Appy does like attention and seems to think that every 'turn' should be hers, even when she has just been out, she can't quite understand that one of the others might be taken out of the field instead of her :D :D :D

WOW you have lots of horses! We do seem to collect them, don't we! At one time I had 5, that was too many and I managed to sell the two gals, both appaloosas. I now have two appaloosas and an American Quarter Horse. It is good to have the two breeds to compare, they are very different. I have always loved spotted horses and ended up with two few spotted American Appaloosas - everyone else that used my main man Roux has had spotty foals, not fair but there you go, that's the roll of the dice. My apps love to be with me and follow me round when I am doing things in the field, standing in the poo, standing on the fork, nosing in the wheelbarrow, always asking questions. They like to work, to be doing things whereas my QH gelding would rather be eating, than ANYTHING else! He is great to go for a long ride on though, just takes you whereas my stallion is always looking at things and asking questions, hard work but enjoyable and rewarding. His son is not backed yet but loves to work - I had him in the round pen at the weekend and he did EVERYTHING I asked of him almost like he had seen the other two working and he wanted to do the same. Don't overdo it, he is only 2. They are lovely horses that own you! Great characters and usually very obliging though some say they can be stubborn I am yet to witness that. Good luck with yours.

My appy is a star. Very cleaver. Very opinionated, he knows his job and likes to get on with it. Hes a brilliant judge of character, he'll test you out when you first meet / ride but once you have his respect he'll do anything for you.
I agree with yorksg about the jealousy. Although hes not a "cuddly" horse he wants to be around me all the time. If im working my tb hes constantly watching, and can get moody with me or the tb afterwards.

I love Appys, I've only had one, bought as a foal at a sale, by Centaur El Cid. Very attention seeking, intelligent, overly brave to the point of getting into situations I had to extract him from. Stand with his legs over the stable door just checking things out. As a yearling he once chased a friend over a field who was holding about 20 balloons flapping and bouncing about and just wanted them off him. The Friend was up to mischief at the time. I couldn't leave my front door open, I would come in and he would be in the house trying the get the carpet up. I had to back him out of the down stairs loo once. Put himself into the wagon, I only sold him 'cos he didn't grow big enough, worst thing I did. Even though he got into everything he never panicked and never hurt himself, he had good feet too. My ambition is to own another one, I NEED one. IMO in comparison, the Appy is to horses, the same as a Siamese is to cats.
Out of interest, does anyone know how the Knabstrupper compares?

OP the horse in your picture is stunning!!

I found my lad was so full of character and very mouthy. He would take the hat off your head and the shoes off your feet and try and walk away with them. If you gave him anything he would try and chew it which I found really funny for some reason.

He was quite opinionated though and if he didn't want to do something you'd know about it. This didn't happen often but it was mainly with the vet or anyone he perceived to be the vet.

He also had one hell of a jump but we found out his grand sire was Rodega Tobias so wasn't surprising. For 14.3 he also had nice paces he wasn't choppy and many people wouldn't have believed how big he was unless you told them.

I just think they are very smart and very beautiful animals- certainly very eye catching. :)

My appy x is very vocal!
He rules me haha he is extremely cheeky
He opens doors
He waits after being turned out for me to give him treats and I have to physically show him my hands are empty before he trundles off !
He is sooo nosy!! He grows 10hh when he sees things
He can be very spooky
He is sensitive and saddle fitting is a nightmare I'm onto my 4 th saddle getting another fitted tomorrow intact!
He craves attention
He thinks everyone and every other horse loves him

Despite that he is 13 and has only had 3 owners including me and they all want him back but he has a forever home :D

Appy's are great fun however if you don't boss them they boss you!

I have a knabstrupper X tb .. But she's appy in colour (see photo album). She's very brave, bold, bossy, moody but equally affectionate, cheeky and also has tantrums when others get attention. She has the most amazing jump in her and learns VERY quickly! She's always into something and if you have a hat, keep hold of it or she'll take it, run away with it and wont give it back! :) she's brilliant and I wont ever change her for anything!

I have a knabstrupper filly - she is quite unlike any horse I have had before - she is very intelligent, dominent, kind, has a good sense of humour, very bold, and although is only 2 years old she loves to be in the school and to be doing things and yes she is number one in her eyes and does get jealous if no one is taking notice of her. I swear sometimes she knows exactly what I'm thinking!!!!!

My Appaloosa X Warm Blood is now 6.5 and I have owned him since he was 3.

Into everything with a terrific sense of humor, His best effort yet is when the young female vet was bending over looking at his foot he reached down took her string in his mouth and gave her a wedgie! he is a total worry wort when you are schooling him and hates getting things wrong but once the "dime drops" he will be all "ahhh I get it look what I can do".

He has firmly decided that i am his owner to the extent that I have now tried to sell him twice and each time he has either injured himself so the sale was called off his last attempt he failed his vetting!

He is off to the UK in 2 weeks to get some riding miles on him with my down to earth friend kelly and to see if he stays sound.

I am going to miss having the monster around but will get to see him every two months or so.

Streusel is a knabstrupper, he is quite nervous but we put this down to something that happened to him just before we bought him at auction a few years ago. He is a lovely nature, very affectionate, good in the school, as said above, he worries a bit until it 'clicks'.
