14.2 arab type pony got stress lami due to alternating weight on legs thanks to a knee injury, combined with his feed not being cut back enough and overgrown feet (farrier didnt turn up while I was out of the country) its the first time he's ever had it after 6 years of ownership

Main issue is that he is now on this...1 scoop alfa-a, 1/2 scoop competition mix, 1/2 cup topspec and cortaflex twice a day, plus a big haynet in the morning, 3 hours in a not very grassy field and a big hayet at night. However his ribs are very visible, his hips jut out and he doesn't look a healthy weight. Also he is very laid back to ride (has always been like this) and has always needed competition mix (was on spillers instant energy mix pre-lami) so I'm faced with finding a feed that will keep weight on him (enough to cover his ribs but stay slim) and give energy, or possibly a supplement if this exists, but must be compatable with a potentially lami prone pony, as yard manager isnt happy with me feeding him the comp mix despite him being worked 6 times a week. Any help appreciated!

What about using Dengie Alfa Beet - it is a Laminitis Trust approved food but is also conditioning. You could add some oil to this to give extra calories, but check that out with a nutritionist first.

my laminitic arab gets dodson and horrell ultimate balancer, ad lib haylage and soya oil. Its sugars you need to avoid, so use something fat based (e.g. oil) for weight gain, plus something like speedi beet or alfa beet.

I had similar problems with a lami prone horse. He is on a lami diet of Hi Fi Light, Hi Fibre Cubes, limited turnout on rough paddock, and 1/4 scoop Equivite. He was lethargic and dull. I spoke to Spillers who advised me to increase the Equivite to a heaped scoop. Although he now has a shiny coat, he exploded twice in the school

I have cut the Equivite back to 1/4 scoop! I have heard others on here say that Equivite gives much fizz

have experinced exactly the same... hes now on Simple system feeds - Lucie nuts and beet... and its given him his energy back and is great for Lammis

thanks everyone, I will look into simple systems - have considered going onto this feed for a long time but as pony is on part livery I would have to pay extra to bring it in and persuade yard to soak everything each night.

He mine is full of it, happy hoof, in during the day with hay and out 4pm till morning, muzzled of course! He was so so thin when I had him in over night and was lacking in energy.

Alfa beet is good, also Alfa Lite instead of Alfa A. I sell a fair amount of Dengie Alfalfa pellets, which are high fibre and just palin ole alfalfa in nut form, especially to people with laminitus prone horses.

Baileys Lo cal balancer is also a top seller, gives everything you need without the calories.

Simple Systems seems to be very popular, they work on a franchise system so I think you have to get local representative to deliver, it's not available through your local feed store - shame, as my customers have been asking me to stock it!
