I'm a complete showing novice but on Saturday I'm entering the ex-racehorse class with Andy as they said he's eligible for it. :D

What do I wear?

What am I expected to do?

What does he wear?

Does it matter he has a bleached shoulder from nerve damage and a scar on his hind leg?

If there's anything else I need to know please share. :)

Scars aren't a problem at all in exracer classes provided they don't look recent.

You wear normal showing gear as for any other showing class, tweed jacket, velvet hat, cream jods. Tie to match his velvet browband. Plain brown numnah. Showing cane if you want one.

Normally in ex racer classes you all ride round as a group and then the judge will come and ride your horse, you probably won't need to do an individual show. Have a smartly dressed groom who is able to come in with you, helpyou take his saddle off for the trot up and then give you a leg up back on again.

Thank you.
Was just wondering about numnah he has a high wither griffen half pad under his saddle and we don't use numnahs although we could if needed. Would it be fine to use just the half pad or will we need to use a numnah?

You'd be absoloutly fine to go without a numnah - just try and make sure the pad is as neatly hidden away as possible :)

Yep, scars from racing shouldn't matter.

In my experience the judge generally doesn't ride (they're ex-racehorses!) so expect to do an individual show. That said I have been in a class where the judge rode, but that was Guy Landau!

Your horse will be judged on manners, so ditch any gadgets you can do without, stick to snaffle and cavesson, and absolutely no martingale provided you're safe and confident to do so.

Have fun!

Thank for advice everyone. He's in a snaffle and cavesson anyway with no gadgets so no worries there. This is just a small local show so I'm not expecting the judge to ride as I have never seen one ride at this level do it before.

Will a blue tweed jacket look alright with beige joddies? Should I wear a stock/ tie if so what colour. I only have a white stock but I do have some ties in different colours.

We have a plain brown one, haven't got any nice coloured ones. Might have a pink one somewhere but not sure it will fit. Is pink alright in a showing class?

In an ideal world you'd have a pretty ribbon browband (assuming he isn't a particularly chunky ex-racer) but you will be fine at local level without, so don't rush out to buy one.

Blue tweed will look fine with beige joddys - yellow, fawn and cream are also options.

You should wear a shirt and tie, not a stock. Ideally a cream or pastal coloured shirt if you can grab one (this is the perfect time of year for bargain coloured shirts in tesco/asda back to school stuff, or stick a few new yellow dusters in with a white shirt on a hot wash), though white is fine at local. Charity shop or dad's/oh's wardrobe for a tie if you don't have.

Pink is a little 'young' in adult classes, but again it'll be fine at local level. What you really want to do is look smart and well presented, regardless of what you wear. If you really enjoy it and what to take it up more seriously, then start worrying about the little details like 'correct' colours of tweed and ribbons.

Good luck!

Okay thank you. Just a had a little look in the garage but wasn't brave enough to venture too far as we have some monster spiders living there so will get my dad to check for browbands tonight. :p

He's a very fine TB so if we find a pretty browbadn I'll chuck it on him. I have my PC tie which I could wear but also have a red one with small white dots which I think is smarter.

Thanks for your tips, quite excited now. :D

This is my outfit which seems to fit in pretty well up to/inc. County level. My shirt is pale blue (husband's) and my tie dark green/tiny gold spots to match the browband. If you want to crib it my boots are on the short side as are the arms of my coat!

In the official RoR (Tatts) classes the judge will always ride, otherwise it's less likely and a short show with trot and canter on both reins (and correct canter strike-offs!) and a nice halt in front of the judge will impress.

I'd also have a practice running your horse up in hand - it's amazing how many people don't practice this and are then stuffed in the ring. If it's a tiny show they may not strip your horse, but you'll be prepared if they do.

If ROR / TARRA then judge will def ride as gamebird says so make sure your horse is ok with a complete stranger being legged up and also that your horse is ok with other people riding. Good luck.

Ask your Dad if you can look at his ties, in my experience all men have a tie collection, whether they were them or not. Most are hideous but you may find something that goes.
