We are based near Tavistock and my wife really could do with some assistance with her newly acquired ex-racehorse. We are familiar with horses but this lady is proving to be a bit more of a challenge.
Her behaviour was a bit up and down but after we put into practise some very sound advice given all seemed to be well for a while. Recently all has gone pear-shaped again so time for some practical assistance. The vet is coming to give her a check over too. Any recommendations for such a person who can travel to us as we currently do not have our own transport.

Thank you Wimbles; we have not heard of the South-West ex-racers. Are they an organisation akin to RoR?

Lanky Loll - no we have not as having had dealings with another region before we moved down here, it has put us off. As a racehorse owner we know of RoR through NTF etc.

SWER are an active Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/Southwestexracers/ the local RoR bods pop up on there regularly.

It's a shame that you had a bad experience with the RoR in another region, I've always found our local teams very helpful.

I'm sure we will probably give RoR a go in due course. You know what it's like, once bitten twice shy! With the benefit of hindsight we wish we'd have sent the mare to where we send the racehorses for rehab before moving down here then she could have joined us later.
Thanks for your help.

If it is just behaviour problems then I can whole heartedly recommend Vanessa Bee from positive horsemanship based at Halwill Junction. She came out to me on Sunday because my youngster's behaviour had deteriorated. She gave me a few very simple techniques to work on that take about 10 minutes every evening and I now have a completely different horse who is now very relaxed and happy rather than the stress head he was the previous week!

I have an ex racer, near Ashwater, so not far from you. I can 100% recommend Ror SW, do check out the Facebook page, full of lovely helpful people!! What issues are you having with yours?

Thank you to those who have posted for your assistance - all useful contacts to have. Having spoke to the people that wrote the retraining book, we now think the issues are because we do not have the mare in a bit she is happiest so going to experiment and see how we get on.

Thanks again.

Second this....... I took my quirky boy to a Horse Agility competition and she was VERY very helpful to everyone doing the course, giving advice, being supportive and encouraging, making suggestions and offering advice. I've also been to a demmo she did - and learnt such a lot just by watching her.
