call me bonkers, but i've just signed a loan agreement for my first horse - an ex racehorse. he's 8 years old and a real sweetheart. been hacking out for the past 3 years so is a joy to hack and certainly no longer looks like a skinny racehorse, but he's hardly schooled at all so is pretty ignorant. i only have him until october and i know patience is going to be key, but would love to make fairly quick progress so we can do some little competitions together and i have a really great instructor to help me, but does anyone have any extra tips or exercises to do out hacking to help get him going a bit more nicely? he's used to being ridden with one hand on the reins and the other leading a nervous child on a pony!

I've got two ex-racers - no point in rushing them as thats when they start having tantrums. Slowly is the key and only short schooling sessions. I find that mine are both really quick learners, but have the attention span of a gnat!
