I have just bought a gorgeous 16h black 10 year old ex racehorse who is quiet thin and out of condition as she has been a broodmare for the last 7 years. She's very woolly and underweight but I can see she will be stunning in a year or so once she's come back into ridden work and built back up again with some quality feed and hay. Does anyone here have before and after pics of their ex racehorses so I can see the transformation please? Thank you x

RIP, best friend and most trusting horse in the world! :)

Oh my god what FANTASTIC photographs and what AMAZING transformations !!!!! Thank you so much everyone, I'm so excited as to see how she will turn out :) will try and post some before pictures :)

Not ridden, she was only in a field so used to lead out in hand to change scenery, I always boot up wherever and whatever she's doing and if Shes being led out I always use bridle because I feel u have more control in a bridle then head collar, ESP as it was a road and fields with horses running messing around either side :)

Some of these TBs are SO skinny- how do they get there? Reg was essentially roughed off and turned out when he was retired from racing and this was him being brought back into work:

And after 3 months off, he's back in work again and looking amazing!

(obligatory bum shot!)

He's a superstar and I think Al wouldn't hesitate to take on another ex-racer. She's done all that with him on her own (well, lots of lessons and the likes along the way!) and I think they make a lovely partnership because of it :)

yeah the first picture of rosc doesn;t even show the half of it, his owner was very scared of him so he was left in a field away from other horses and not fed. he was wild to lead in/out and that was if she could catch him, turned out they just never got on, all he needed was some tlc and quickly filled out! :D
i agree they all have such a change!

Lolo: the person I bought Maisie off bought her off my YO (who was shocked to see the photos of her) and he tried to breed from her, she got an infection and then it was too late in the season to try breed from her, during this period she was just left in a field throughout winter and it wasn't until I was looking for an ex racer to buy, I got put in touch with her old owner then he started to try build her up ready to sell to me .. I then bought her .. She was in our field well rugged 3 feeds a day and walked out in hand etc lots and lots of haylage, she started to build up nicely so started to bring her back into work again, I used to lead her out when she wasn't doing anything though let her see the place and not getting bored stuck in a field all day etc .. She's now blooming looking fantastic jumping and hopefully will be out dressaging etc at some point! Just take it nice and slowly with her

I hope it didn't come across like I was blaming anyone- I know how hard it is keeping weight on horses like them. I was just wondering if there were any links so people can avoid it- Reg was lucky that he had a chilled time with really good quality grass and hay available to him. He was lacking any muscle, and his ribs were visible just along with his hip bones but he was covered enough.

Your girl is a stunner GypsyGirl- she's lucky she's got you :)

It's nice to see tbs after photos .. Thats why when a post like this comes up I'm always one to post photos because Maisie was SO poor when I bought her but looking at her now and riding her and seeing how well she's come on is fantastic, I've never really had a project before and I will keep her forever .. We have since moved to a livery yard down the road and the staff all know her etc and this winter she looks great.. She's no longer on her haylage she's actully eating hay for once! Just building her muscle up now which is coming along!

It just makes me a bit mad because since being at the new yard I've actully had 1 livery bitch at me like mad about her but until you no the full story and no how much hard work has gone into it etc there not ones that should be commenting .. (sorry me ranting lol)

Can't quote on my phone, but thanks! :) he's a star.

Still got a lot of work to do on his top line, but yeah he's looking good! And that's only on 2 bales of hay so far this winter ;)

Pete ...

Dragged out of the field after being turned away and wintered out (didn't cope with the snow very well)

In my experience horses tend to come out of racing looking quite good - lean but muscley. If they are turned away over the summer they will do well for themselves, if they are turned away over the winter, unless they are on exceptionally good pasture with ad lib forage, they will inevitably look rubbish. I find the muscle from racing will drop off them and make them all go through a slightly bony patch before the new muscle really builds back up. Pete is double the horse this winter compared to last.

Here goes .... This is her all tacked up. She's very hairy and has no muscle and is still underweight but she's doing really well and I can't wait to see the difference in a few months time :)

Bedford joy: she's lovely! And getting her now is a good time as you have all the spring grass coming through and summer etc! I'll be looking forward to your updates!

Wow, you guys have done so well with all of them :) Really am amazed by the short period of time it has taken you also to get as far as you have. Well done

Crikey, ljohnsonsj, not being rude, but you really had some vision with Ella, didn't you? You obviously have a very good eye for potential. I would never have said they were the same horse!

They are all an absolute credit to you and testament to how putting in time and effort will reward you. Have to say that Pete is a stunning colour though...

I brought all of mine home straight out of training. I rode them in training and so saw them at their supreme fittest and best. I then turned them into show horses and so they now look totally different but just as good as ever. Different job, different body structure.

Mine didn't actually race... He didn't make the cut during race training so was booted out of the industry when he was rising four - to someone who didn't exactly take fab care of him...

A week or so after he arrived with us... Can't really see in this photo how much of a mess he was in...

DarcyJune2011.jpg

We discovered he could eat... Lots... :D

Darcy29July2011.jpg

He really started to get some shape about him after a while and 'unfolded'...

I don't have any recent ones but he's coming along really nicely and both looks like and acts like, a totally different horse... He's 'home' and gives the most amazing "wrap my neck completely around you for a proper cwtch" cuddles...:)
