Does anyone know where I can find a ex-racer to rehome and bring on?? I do not want to loan from a charity because I would feel inhibited. I want something to bring on for dressage mainly but to also do some low level jumping probably only BN/Disc, pref a younger horse and a minimum of 15.2.
I have a limited budget(up to around 1000) but I am offering a 5* home and I am very experienced, I have had horses for years and trained and worked with them since I left school. Does anyone have any ideas where I could find the type? I may try some sales but thought I would just test the waters and see if I could pick you knowledgeable peoples brains :)

It might be worth contacting some racing stables. They might let you know if there are any coming up for sale. :)

My friends have one they've just got from where we work that they are selling for 1000, lovley filly who could do anything really, but we down in Kent so probably too far for you?

I posted a wanted ad and got lots of replies from people with ex racers - got some that weren't even advertised yet and it meant that they were all still live sales as such and I wasn't wasting my time ringing about horses that had already been sold :)

It might be worth having a look on the ex racehorse owners forum, there is a rehoming section on there and some really nice helpful people.

Im going to be looking soon for an exracer. My budgets around £1k as well.

4Faults - if you fancy going up to ruthcarr racing let me know as Im near you. It looks like she has some nice horses on her website.

I got a lovely mare from Horses First Racing - bought her off a friend of Jeremy Gask the trainer there; but I think most of their 'rejects' go through the sales. My point is that it's really worth doing your research into the training yard an ex-racer has been at - I've heard nothing but good about Horses First and my mare is fantastic, has a great temperament and has gone from strength to strength - sadly often not the case with ex-racers if they've been over-stressed or pushed too hard too young, stable vices and physical issues start cropping up.
I got a lot of info on Horses First from a vet in the area who couldn't recommend them highly enough. As I say, don't think they sell directly but it's a good idea if you are visiting sales to research yards and buy something from a decent yard (preferably that hasn't been hammered round tracks since it turned 2 - just my opinion, don't shoot me!)

Good luck! xx

my boy is from darleys re-homing scheme, lovely boy. bit green as only just turned 4 but lovely quality well bred boy.
i have just finsihed my 3 month trial period and now he is all mine. only paid £100 +VAT for him and he is just the best!
you have to apply online, but it did not take me long to get one, about 2 months from application i think.
victoria spicer of horse magazine has a darley horse too!

I bought both my ex racers through freeads (the paper) rather than the website as they don't all feature on there. Both were £1000 and under :)

I am also a member of an exracer forum and there often some for sale on there too :)

Some really great suggestions guys im going to start checking some out so keep them coming :D Really hope I find one.

Penfold- I think I will def try and get up to ruth carr at some point, we should try and co-ordinate would be nice to have another opinion.
