My lil well bred section A tried his heart out today at fairly local show, it was his first time out and he was an Angel. stood nicely at judge walked and trotted up exactly when asked and didnt get placed yet the ones who did looked ungroomed, handlers were in jeans and t shirts and horses in dirty headcollars and they all behaved awfully.
Judge said my colt was very handsome with good potential, nice action and a lovely neck and shoulder. A few refused to trot and most leapt around all over the place. So if its not presentation, movement and behaviour that makes up a part of their decision then what the hell does!!!!

Dont think may take into account behaviour my youngster is so quite in the ring never put a foot out of place no bucking rearing or anything really and always in general classes of m&m comes 2nd would love to know as well what they want, mind guess im lucky as she is always the highest placed for her breed in the classes.

Every judge is different and seem to like certain breeds of horses or colours. Thats just showing for you.

Well I judge M and Ms.

I expect sec As to be square, leg at each corner with no lumps and bumps. To be untrimmed (or at least subtly trimmed) and clean. With good confirmation and a bit of spark.

I also expect them to MOVE. I like a expressive and forward trot.

(To be honest with Welshies manners aren't necessarily what the judges look for... watch the professionals showthe A and D stallions and you'll get what I mean.... )

However if I had a dirty GOOD sec A and a clean poor example, I'd choose the dirty one.

Remember at a local show it may not be an M and M specialist however

they should be looking for a pony that confirms as near as possible to the breed society standard for that pony if it is an in hand class behaviour is not always paramount as long as the horse is not dangerous.

an ungroomed pony with a scruffy handler would be placed higher perhaps than a more polished pony if the ungroomed one was very close to perfection according to breed standards. sometimes at local shows the judges do not have a knowledge of what the breeds standards are so they may have other criteria they use.

Hmm maybe you weren't "local" enough, or, in my experience, you'd probably have been placed if he was a Norwegian Fiord. Next time put him in Family Mount because Section A's are definaitely suitable for any member of the family to ride.........or is this just normal for The Caddington Show, being a Chiltern & Thames qualifier too! :D

blitznbobs - i have just put a few pics of him on here in a recent post. Not great pics but all i have at mo. What do you think of him. first pic was in winter and hes all hairy

We have 2 section a's one is like a mini section D, the other much slimmer more towards a section B.

We have been finding the slimmer type A's are doing better, my one that looks like a mini D was dropped 2 places at one show because "he is a nice traditional type"!!!!, the 2 that were moved up looked that if they were trimmed and plaited could have passed for show ponies!. Yet the week before he won his in hand class and took the section A championship and the judge said he was a true section A that is exactly what she is looking for.

Now we take it as it comes, if we have a good day we are happy, if the judge doesn't like us, there is another day and another show.

As Blitznbobs says at local shows it may not be an M and M specialist

i think you are in the same region as me then!

to the OP why not go affiliated you might have more success - i have found this with my pony as he is then judged by people who specialise in M&Ms he has been at the bottom of the line at local but when i went affiliated he has been near the top at county and affiliated. there are even classes for welsh A's only at some of them. if you are in herts you might be interested in

He's very pretty (Love chestnuts that colour) and if he has a nice action he'll do OK but for most judges I would say that he has a bit much white on his back legs to do well at county... Showing world is very picky... He'll probably do better under saddle than in hand.. Oh and also I know that you're not supposed to but I would 'descretely (sp?) thin his mane...'
