When do you use excercise rugs - ie hacking slow, fast, schooling, dont bother
- how do you use them ie under saddle, under numnah, wrap around person.
Do you find that they fit the horse? what size do you buy?
What do you recomend or what to avoid

Only asking as we had a lucky escape tonight, wind blew excercise rug up off pony's bum - yep string under tail , and it spooked him a little - as it was wrapped round me it was easy to undo and carry home - but could have been a little nasty if it had been flapping under the saddle.

Hacking. However if I knew I was going on a fast, hard hack I wouldn't bother though because they get hot enough without them!

I have a Mark Todd wrap around/competition rug. I use it like this:

My numnah is a square one though, I put it under the rug.

Yes mine fits rather well. She is chunky 15.3HH and takes a 6'3 rug and I believe the exercise rug is 4'6? I love my Mark Todd because it's waterproof AND fleece lined, best of both!

I personally don't like wrapping the rug around myself. I do find that the wind actually gets hold of it much easier? I fasten mine like shown in the above picture, I've had no problems :)

I have a fab one that velcros in front of the pommel (sp), has a cut out bit for your leg and fillet string in a newmarket fleecey wool type thing I got it off a friend who bought it for her 16.2!!! it didnt fit and the company wouldnt accept returns but it fits my 14hh perfectly .. The only time Iv bought one was a flourescent one and I took my mare to the shop as its only down the road to try on! shes 5'9 in rugs and Im sure it said 4'7 ?? but it was years ago so I could be wrong..!

I dont like ones that go round the rider too.. they scare me. I use a nuumed half pad and numnah under my saddle and take away the numnah when using a sheet .. I dont like square ones that you have to fold under the saddle flaps and I dont like to see them coming down past the hocks! I have a lighty up tail guard too which can attatch to it which I shall use on my youngster just for a bit more stability!

I used to ride for a lady and I was hacking out and the sheet completely slipped round!! pony was a saint and soon as he stood on it, stopped so I knew something was wrong ! could have been worse though.

eta - I have a summer and winter flourescent one and rarely hack without one.

I have a great whitney thick wool one for very cold days hacking and a nordic thermatex wrap round for competitions, the thermatex one stays put even when jumping in the warm-up. Both were expensive but have lasted for years.

I use Equafleece hi-viz yellow ones for hacking when it's cold or wet. They are waterproof and breathable, don't slip and aren't rustly or noisy if a whip or branch touches them. I use them under my saddle pad/numnah, and don't need one that wraps around me as I wear waterproof chaps or overtrousers.
