Murphy lacks substance behind, his front is quite nicely developed now, but his backside needs a bit more rounding!

Is there any particular type of excercise I can do , be it lunging or riding to help him improve his botty?

Thank You in advance!

i need this help too.but some times in picturing him with a large round butt then i have to remind myself he is a tall warmblood and maybe his bum should not be big.lots of circles and uphill work is what in trying and jumping when hes up to it .i love jumpers bums

i find using a pessoa works brilliantly for bums. it will also develop topline and stomach muscle if used correctly.Great peice of kit

Sorry - biased and had to say that.

I agree with hill work, but i also live on the side of a hill.

Any work that involves collection is going to help the back end develop - rein back is a good one, i also do a lot of walk to canter and halt to canter transitions and turns on the haunches, all of which make them shift the weight from front to back. - Trouble is - can he do them because he has a big bum, or has he developed a big bum from doing the excerises? Ummmmm...

Heh Rem thats a puzzling one!!

Thanks - as regards hill work is this simply a lot of walking up - roadwork? Or should it be on softer ground and then at trot etc?

Jumping....I was told by the judge in show ring other week to start Dermot lightly jumping to help build up his backend. Dermot is only 5/6 and an ISH so won't finish developing till hes 8od, so I'm not overaly worried. Its just he has a very well devloped front end in contrast.

I would LOVE to be able to do hill work....but is flat round here

So can't do that!!!! My instructor said to do lots of transitions, circles....and things to make him start listening, then when he's listening i can start asking him to lift his back end up...which means he is starting to use it properly and it's changing shape

I started doing more lateral work to get my mare to use her backend better, hoping that she would build up. Lateral exercises definately help her engage. Do most of it in walk until established then incorporate it into sessions with transitions and other stuff.

Prob any hill work as long as you keep on the bit and make them work from behind, not just slouch or drag themselves up on forehand. Can be hard on rider too!!
