Excessive fluid

I will try to keep this brief.
In 2007 we tried to breed from my cob mare. She was going to be AI'd. The vet said she had fluid in the uterus which he was trying to remove. I can't remember what the injection he was using was called I think it began with O.
For various reasons we then send my mare to the stud for their vet to do. They found the same problem with the fluid. I think they tried flushing her out.
We gave up for that year and got another vet (highly recommended) to look at my mare at the start of 2008 and her opinion was my mare wasn't worth the money it would take to get rid of this fluid.
None of the vets could tell us what was causing this fluid.

Since then my mare has always squirted fluid. She is worse when in season. The vet said this was her natural way of trying to get rid of the fluid.
Recently she has been squirting huge abouts of fluid. Last month after hunting she squirted about half a bucket of fluid out. I assumed that was because of the excitement of the day.
But everyday we are finding more puddles of it in the field and she squirted a decent amount when she was eating her food this evening (she is in season now).
Her general fitness has dropped, I haven't been able to do much work with her but she is very hard to keep fit. The vet did say this could be because of this fluid.
Has anyone ever heard of this type of thing before?
I will talk to the vet next week and see what they think.

It sounds like she pools urine in the vagina and is made worse by the fact she isnt as fit now.
A quick vet examination should be able to tell you.
It wont cause her any harm if she isnt being bred from.
I have one mare that does some strange things as she got nerve damage around the urethra after she had her first foal.
Fotunately she doesnt pool urine but does often have to have anumber of wees to clear everything

It is important here, to differentiate between uterine fluid (fluid produced as part of an inflammatory response inside the uterus), and urine which is expelled in a more expressive fashion and in greater volumes when the mare is in season.

I think it is unlikely that the fluid you are seeing your mare expel is uterine in origin. IF there is that much fluid coming from her uterus then there is a more serious problem, such as pyometra (pus in the uterus). Caused by a chronic, untreated infection.

You have not given us much information about your mare - is she a maiden? old? young?

We were told she had had a foal when she was in Ireland. She came to England when she was 5yrs old.
She is now 15yrs old so was 12yrs old when we tried to breed from her.
