My parsons JR licks her genitals a lot, but is otherwise fairly normal in behaviour. She is booked into the vet on thursday, but before then can you give me any reasons for, or ways to distract/stop her.

Habit/OCD, external irritation or an externalisation of something that's bothering her inwardly.
Is it weeping/turning into a granuloma or causing her any problem?
Things to look at would be feeding, washing or household cleaning products, floor surfaces, parasites or contact with plants/pollen.
You could put a cone on her, verbally tell her it's not what you want and then give her something to do/play with etc, or just verbally correct her when you catch her doing it.
What age is she and is she spayed and how long has it been going on for? Is she unusually thirsty?

My parsons is incredibly licky. She's only got to get the tiniest scratch and she'll turn it into a big open sore :(

Have your vet test her urine for infection.

She is 12 years old, not spayed, active and otherwise healthy, though we have noticed over the past year she has slowed down a bit. There are no open wounds, it's just rather too pink to be normal.
Good call CC it hadnt occurred to me, though I had thought about plants, pollen etc. In the last year we have acquired a cat and changed our washing powder. Lets hope it's not the cat! The new washing machine has detergent in containers within the machine and doses the washing according to the wash setting - though there is a by-pass method to use a different detergent. I'll try using the wool wash on the dog bedding and see if that calms her down.

If she is still entire at her age just keep an eye that there is no discharge, pyometra can be a risk in older, unspayed females but hopefully it's just an allergy/irritation from the powder.
