I have a border collie that is more white than black and is moulting really badly and has been doing now for several weeks, I am brushing her every other day and getting lots out of her but it also mats under her armpits and between her back legs and then I am having to cut it out. She is nine years old and I have never known her to moult like this, there are clumps of it everywhere in the house, the thing is the more I brush her the more she seems to lose and my house looks like someone has been shearing sheep in it. Does anyone have any tips on what to add to their food that helps to reduce this? I have tried something from the petshop before but I can,t think what it was called and it didn,t seem to make any difference anyway.

living wih 7 Belgian shepherd dogs ( think rough coliie coat type) - there always seems to be at least one of them moulting! - there is no way of stopping or reducing a moult once it has started but you can lessen the effects.

This is what I do -Wait for a sunny dry day then I bath the dog and blast it dry - if you hav'nt got a blaster then try a hand held hair dryer - but do it outside !!! - this does two things , it will blow out most of the dead coat that is lying on the surface and lift the rest of the dead under coat ready for you to strip out. You will then need a grooming rake , work on small sections and pull the rake against the lie of the coat - the undercoat should come out very easily - have a comb and a bin liner to hand so that you can clean out the rake and deposit all the dead coat as you go - it will only be under coat that comes out. When you have done the bulk of the body coat then using dilute conditioner (or specialist detangling grooming spray) spray where ever there are any tangles ( be careful not to get this in her eyes) and use the comb to comb out problem areas such as behind her ears, the feathering on her legs etc. When you have got as much dead coat as possible then finish by using a bristle brush and brush her with the natural lie of the coat smoothing down her top coat as you go - et voila - a beautiful dog and no more dead coat on your carpets !!!.

I used to do a daily grooming with a rubber curry comb. It drags out the dead hair. Poor dogs dont seem to know what to do with their coats. The weather is so weird right now.

Have you changed her diet recently? the reason I ask is because my dog used to moult constantly, I have changed his feed, am now feeding Burns dog food and within a week he stopped moulting - may be worth looking into her diet.

funny that... i took my dog to vets this am for this problem he says it might be allgeric recation to something he had sore ears aswell that gradually got worse as weeks go by. it started to smell hence trip to vet, explained to him etc, he gave him inj and told me to come back next week... his ears had cleared up since this am and he hasn't rolled on to his back for rub yet!! He's on nature diet and james welbeloved but is moving on to burns once jwb has finished. well i'll see which works!!

I haven,t changed her diet, as somebody else said i think the weather has a lot to do with it and to make matters worse i have now found fleas on her, she hasn,t had them in years . I feel like taking the clippers to her and taking the whole lot off. Its so frustrating.

oh yes they do ! - it all depends if they take after their lab side or their poodle side - in fact if you want to guarantee a non shedding breed why not just get a Poodle ???

....or a Bichon ....or a Soft Coated Wheaten ....or a Kerry Blue....or ....well any 'proper' non shedding breed
