Hello

I haven’t been on this forum for years but thought it might be helpful to gather some opinions.

I have an (almost) 29 year old mare. She’s recently been diagnosed with cushings & is on prascend. She also has EOTRH & had all of her upper incisors removed some time ago, due to this. A few months ago, I noticed that her haylage was always wet & couldn’t think why. Until I realised that she is salivating excessively while eating. She has been a bit drooly while eating since her upper teeth were removed. However, this has come to be really excessive & goes over and above anything I’ve ever seen before. Her haynets etc are literally dripping wet, stable is soaking & her whole face is constantly stained and wet from eating wet sticky haylage.

The vet gave her a basic examination and didn’t see anything. He suggested that it was likely to be dental. I had a (reputable and qualified) EDT examine her & he confirmed that although she is missing a couple of back teeth, they are otherwise in good shape & he could see nothing that would likely be causing the issue.

I plan to go back to my vet for advice. However, there are no obvious signs of pain etc & I wouldn’t be willing to go down the route of extensive investigations due to her age & the fact that she is no longer insured.

I’m interested to see if anyone else has had a horse with a similar issue, and what the diagnosis was. TIA

Is she swallowing ok? Have you watched her eat to check for any discomfort, holding head to one side, quidding, etc.? Has anyone checked around the salivary gland area for anything odd or unusual? Maybe another vet might be able to spot something amiss. Hope you get some answers.
