My horse always wee's while out on a hack as soon as he steps foot on a grass verge. Tonight we were out for about 2 hours in that time he wee'd about 5 times. He did struggle it came out with no problem. He's not drinking more, infact his water bucket is over half full in the morning. He is alright in himself, vet is coming out next week so will have a chat then. He's my new horse so can't help but worry.

He may be anxious in his new home but it is possible that he has an infection. Ask the vet for a sterile sample jar in advance and try to take a urine sample in before the vet visit otherwise they will have to put a catheter in which is invasive. Are you feeding him the same food as the previous owner? Avoid foods with molasses and alfalfa as it can increase the PH in the urine and make the bladder more prone to infection. I also think clover can do the same thing. You could also consider putting him on Global Herbs - Eazi Pee for a few months. It could also be a habit of his - did you ask the previous owner?

He's been with me for 3 months now so don't think he's anxious, he's a very laid back chap. He always wee's out on a hack but tonight he did it a lot. With regards to feed he has a scoop of baileys low cal, he is on good grass yes. And the stable is not very wet so wouldn't say he does loads in the stable.

I had the same experience with one of my mares, who turns out to have muscle problems.

The posturing to wee (whether or not any actually comes) can be a sign of EPSM, but I think it may be seen in other muscle problems too. With my girl, I think it's a selenium deficiency which has caused the muscle problems, but I have no proof of that yet.

So, from my own experiences, I would say have a urine test but also worth having a blood test, including muscle enzymes, and go from there.

Of course there may be loads of other things, about which I know nothing.

I would probably agree with poster about grass. New grass has a very high water content and it is noticeable that water consumption goes down (and in my mare's case wet bedding goes up). And she stops to pee two or three times during a 2 hour hack (notrmally none/once). However if he is passing small amounts and straining there may be an infection present. Try and get a sample and ask your vets to check it.

Thanks everyone, he doesn't seem to be straining and his bed is no wetter. I've ordered some global herbs eazypee & restore, and will keep an eye on him. And see the get a sample for the vet when he comes.
