My horses have always lived at my mums house and she has always, well looked after them really. Because of OHs work it looks like we will be moving, so Badger will have to come with.

I'll be keeping him on DIY and I'm just a bit paranoid I'll do something stupid or that I have underestimated the cost of DIY!!

So if you keep your horse on DIY for say £25 a week - how much does all the other stuff cost? I'm talking hayledge/bedding/feed really I know it varies a lot but would just like to know some typical examples if you would.

I know it sounds slack/thick but I haven't had much to do with that side of things for a while and I'm not sure how much things cost!

We get free shavings and they all share a big round bale of haylege so i'm finding it hard to estimate!

Any help would be fab!

it depends on what type of bedding you want to use?
my friend pays £1.80 for a bale of straw from her yard, and i paid £1 from a local farmer.
some yards limit what bedding you can use and some will insist you buy it from them.

Oh! to pay £1.00 or £1.80 per bale i pay £8.00 for a bale of chippings and £10.00 per weeks worth of haylage but i suppose it depends where you live,i am in surrey so i expect its the going rate and the diy is £110.00 per month

I get straw for £1.50 a bale. When my horse is in at night in winter I use about 8 bales a month. When he was on shavings it was about £35 a month.
Feed costs me about £15 and hay last year worked out about £40 a month over the winter. I love this time of year when he's out all the time so I hardly need to buy any hay or straw!

I have been doing DIY for years and wouldn't do it any other way! My costs are as follows.

Hay £3.00 p/b I use approx 4 per week winter
Shavings £6.00 p/bale I use approx 2/3 per week winter
Stable /Grazing £30.00 p/week

I feed Dodson and Horrel pasture nuts and Safe and Sound chaff plus supplements.

You then have your insurance and farrier costs on top.

Hope this gives you a good idea and you must poo pick your paddocks!! Good luck

When you add up livery, hay, straw, worming, shoes, vaccinations etc etc etc list the costings for a year then break it down to per month and realistically you're looking at £150 per month to look after a horse on DIY properly. At least thats the costings I've come up with in the Wiltshire area. (Thats assuming hay and straw doesn't increase in price this autumn!)

Depends like others have said but we have round bales at our yard and get charged £11.50 per week to use as much as we want.

For feed it depends on the horse but if he is on a basic mix and chaff, I would budget about £12 per month ish (one bag of each per month). plus supplements etc.

DIY is great - and I sure you will have loads and loads and loads of (largly unwanted and unrequested and incorrect) advice from fellow DIYers if you get stuck LOL

15hh horse (per week):

£25 livery
£12 hay (£4.50 per small bale round us!)
£6.50 bedding (at one bale shavings per week)
£10.50 feed (at 2.5kg feed per day)
£7 balancer
£10 shoes (£60 every 6 weeks)

Total = £71 per week

Add to that wormer and vaccinations

Ignoring any insurance premiums & Shoes (anything from £55 - £80 a set depending on where you are in the country) I think if you budget for around £50 per week you should be about right. This would be £25 Stable & Grazing, £10 hay (3 bales), £10 hard feed & chop (more if feeding a balancer), £10 1.5 bales of shavings per week. Your costs would probably increase in the winter with you needing more hay, more hard feed & probably more beding.

I feed hay, and in the winter get through 2-3 bales a week at £2.50 a bale, 1 bale of shavings a week (I deep litter) currently paying £5.50 a bale, feed in the winter isnt too bad... bout £10-£15 a week, he gets Alfa A oil, Alfa Beet and Endurance mix over the winter with a balancer, and Alfa A oil, and comp mix in the summer, at about £8 a week in the summer.

I am on DIY wich is about £45 a week which include hayledge, use of an outdoor dressage arena, lunge arena, outdoor sand school and use of the cross country, and show jumping fields, plus at my yard alot of competitions are held there so it doesn't cost me anything in transport. I can also hire out the huge indoor at an extra cost.
Shavings I can buy from my yard at £7 a bale or I can buy them from a tack shop at much the same cost.
My mare is on Alfa A and Pasture mix in the winter and it is usually about £10 a bag for each, however a bag does last well over a month. And then you have shoes, vaccinations, wormer etc.
I suppose how much it costs all depends on what you pay for your livery and what you get for your livery.
E.g At my last yard it was £40 a week including hayledge and free use of the indoor.
Hope this made sense!
