I've just been told about a local show on sunday locally, I have my riding mare on box rest and have been going stir crazy not competing, thankfully others at the yard have offered their horses for me to ride, but not compete!! I have 2 yearlings my homebred boy who is warmblood cross and a welsh sec d cross as a companion! Well they don't have any classes suitable for my warmblood but they do have in hand mountain and moorland!!! So going to take my welsh boy along!!!!

I've never done mountain and moorland before, I take it it's show natural, no trimming/plaiting???? He's got a long thick mane and tail!! What sort of attire for me to wear?????

As a yearling I take it he needs to wear bridle and bit as opposed to a show halter???

I run my yearling in a leather showing halter, and as a part bred she is plaited and trimmed. If he's not been gelded then I would assume bridle and bit though, but don't quote me on that, I only have mares!!! If your boy is welsh looking enough to pass off as a full D then I would go au natural. :)

Thank you for that, there's no way on this earth that I'd manage anything other than a running plait in his mane, he's a stocky type, so could pass for full sec d, although he's got god knows how many other breeds in his pedigree, enough welsh blood though to have PBW papers!! Are partbreds allowed to enter M&M or do they have to be full pedigree natives???

M&M classes are for purebred M&M only, if you do still decide to take him & show him as a "Welsh" yearling he should really be shown in a white halter & with a full mane & tail. Fihunt is quite correct though, if you do show him as a PB welsh he should be plaited & trimmed. Good luck & have fun.

Unless its an affiliated cless he does not need to be regitered, but he still should technically be 100% bred to enter a M&M...If he looks welsh enough you might get away with it, if not you may be better off in a different class.

If he's a colt he should be bitted, if he's gelded then welsh halter.

rehorses.com ,<----will tell you the turn out required for both of you when showing a M&M

Very interesting, there is also a 'cob type' class, would I do better to enter that class, I thought (naively!) I could chance it in both as it's only a local show, and only for experience for him! Just so you can get an idea of his type of build this is his dad:

In build he is going to be very similar to his sire, with a little less feather and he's bay (although the most sun bleached bay you'll ever see and currently looks smokey dun at the moment!!!)

Also in the cob class can I show him au natural! He looks better that way than plaited in some sort of fashion!!!

Check the cob class rules(usually hogged rather than plaited)....but you should be ok showing him natural.

Are there any partbred classes?

Is is dad the Welsh? he looks it, but as you can't get piebald/skewbald welshs, i assume he's part bred too?

His sire is partbred, (royal welsh coloured part bred winner!!) and mum is also partbred so welsh blood on both sides, I'm going to go along to the show in time to enter the m&m and see if they will accept entry without pedigree papers (as said only a local show, so may be more relaxed on rules!) otherwise, will enter the cob class, as said it's more for experience than anything else, unfortunately no there aren't any partbred classes, there are only 4 in hand classes, and non suitable for my warmblood! boohoo!!

I don't see why they wouldn't let you in, esp as i've never really known them ask for papers, esp at a local as not even every full bred is registered. so his breeding status would only really affect your placing (and tbh the judge might not notice)

His sire is stunning so i'm sure you'll do well if he looks like his dad.
