Ive always given my horses a couple of days off after a flu jab - even tho the vet says its not necessary - the one time I did work horse the day after he was not very well afterward (snotty etc nothing major)...

Now I don't know if this was co incidence -- but it's not a huge issue for me to give ponies a few days off... I was just wondering what others do ...

I was told at a young age that exercise is fine on the day of a flu jab as long as the horse doesn't sweat up. As there is no guarantee they won't be muppets that day and work themselves into a lather over a funny looking cloud, I don't exercise the day of flu jab but carry on as normal next day.

i tend to give mine a couple of days off and then light work up to the 7 day mark post injection - never had any probs but have had friends who haven't and their horses have ended up a bit under the weather because of it - I do remember being told by my old equine vet when the vaccine first came out that i was to not sweat my horse/pony up for 7 days post vacc, therefore i have always abided by that "rule" as such

I posted this very same query a couple of days ago and the general consensus was no strenuous exercise for 24 hours minimum. I checked with my vet when I booked and she said that is what they usually advise.

The first year I had my lad, I rode him the day after a flu jab and although he was happy to go out (always willing bless him) he was most definitely under the weather. Since then I have always given him a couple of days off.

Work them before the jab on the day make sure they are cool before getting the jab walking exercise the next day then back to normal as long as they look ok.
