Why do people use bandages over boots when exercising (mainly on the flatwork side of things)
do they offer any/extra protection?

do you mean using bandages instead of boots? not a pair of boots and then a pair of bandages on the same legs at the same time??

Good point PL. I obviously need to drink tea before coming on here!

If you do mean that, then I'd quite like to know this as well. There appears to be a bit of a fad at my yard at the mo for using bandages instead of boots for SJing. Just don't get it?

We only used to have bandages, then when tendon boots and fetlock boots became more popular bandages were used less and less.

Bandages are great, so long as whoever is putting them on knows how to do it. Too often the ends are started and/or tied on the bone or on the tendon, instead of in the dent between the bone and the tendon; if gamgee is used it too is often placed incoreectly, causing pressure points. Then there's the actual tension of the bandage itself, different for different types of bandages/uses. Those that know what they're doing use them because they feel they can get better protection that is personalised to teh horse. I prefer boots these days as I can't be bothered with bandages, plus I'm out of practice
