For those who have had /got a horse with a bone spavin, what sort of exercise did you do while it was fusing?
Vets have told me to work him until it fuses but never said what sort of work, dont want to do too much or not enough....

My mare had an accident 7 years ago and a leg had to be x rayed. The vet told me that when they were looking that she had a spavin. She never showed any symptoms so once she was better (5 months later), I just went about getting her fit again. The end of last summer, she went a tiny bit lame and my farrier said that it would just have moved down the joint and to keep her going, if i rested her for long she would just get stiff. She had a week off and came sound again. I didn't do any flat work, just hacking, straight lines. I just walked mostly with a little bit of trot eventually. I put it down to having a lot of lessons last summer and the fact that she is 20 and an ex racehorse.
I did speak to the vet about it and he agreed that this was the most likely explanation and to do what I as doing.
I put her on top spec senior feed balancer with the 10:10 joint supplement in it and it worked really quickly. When i first started riding her again, she felt a wee bit stiff for the first 10 mins but that quickly changed and she went back to her normal way of striding out.
I haven't had another problem but I now just do very little flat work with her.
I suppose I have been lucky that it hasn't affected her much. If she was sore, she certainly would let me know about it, she isn't the type to suffer in silence lol
