Our little pony needs a bit of energy reduction before my daughter rides :)

We had it cracked but the girl that was riding him, now has school commitments , so ATM so can only come as and when school permits , and rightly so :)

I don't have a school, only his paddock , I am eager to lunge but I am worried accidents may happen, due to uneven ground.

Would you risk it and if not any ideas how else to take the edge off ? Xx

Groundwork? Backwards/forwards/sideways etc, moving his feet, not necessarily fast and continuous like lungeing but makes the brain tick and you can do little bits of lungeing in between. Even put out some poles or obstacles, we use cones, boxes etc. Last month I went round the farm and found the most randomest things I could find (garbage bins, a giant stuffed horse, rope, barrels, plastic feed bags etc) and did some desensitising practise. All good practise for meeting things when riding :)

That sounds good, although to be honest, he is pretty bomb proof , love him :D

He needs to get rid of that explosion of energy :o

May try taking him on a different route than the bigger rider to see if that helps!

Would it help? She does/did gallop him, so is he getting excited thinking about the big blow out ?

Lunging & long lining. Any local adults who'd ride & lead him on a hack for you? I did it years ago for a stuck mum, used to meet me with pony up the road from yard. Would do the same again so worth a shot.

No one near me small enough to ride him, I am on a diet so that I can !!

Would love to lunge the little pocket rocket put of him , and even though friends tell me he will be ok, I am scared to on his paddock !!!

I think I will just have to get my fat bum out and walk trot canter in hand !!!

Also will do interesting things as have been suggested.

Many thanks :)

I meant get an adult to lead him from their horse so he gets to go for a fast hack, rather than riding him. Could you lead him from a bike if you don't have to go on roads?

It's something we did in our teens as one of the winter fields was down a huge hill 10 mins walk away. Speeded things up a bit!
Provided he listens to voice commands & is good in hand I've never had a problem. And if he's happy with a bike alongside normally. In our teens we did just jump on & go holding end of leadrope under one hand on the handle bar. More sensible way would be leading him while pushing bike & getting someone to walk & jog alongside the first few times you ride the bike. And I'd also suggest riding bike one handed with lr in the other so you don't get pulled over if he trips etc. And I would never do it any where not enclosed just incase, and only with quiet well behaved types, not a good way to exercise a nervous 16.2 but can be an option with a pony.
