Am I right in thinking that size wise, you buy a foot shorter than your normal rug length?

I think it's 18" shorter ie if you normally take a 6 ft 6, you buy a 5 ft...

My boys both wear 6'6" rugs and they have 4'6" exercise rugs

I guess it depends on their build. My mare takes a 6.9 rug, a 4.9 wrap around sheet was too small. They only seem to up to 5.3. I have one on order (different make), so fingers firmly crossed. Its not so much of an issue with the type that go under the saddle, but I need a wrap around one for schooling so that I can lose it when needed!

My excercise sheet came in small, med, large or x large.

I got a medium for Cropi who takes 6ft rugs and an x large for my friends horse who takes 6ft 6

Depends on the horse. Measure from the girth to the point of buttock if you want to know exactly.....
