Help!!!

After an interesting weekend when Lyla told me her saddle is not comfortable and now I am experiencing similar pain after landing on my ribs

Assuming her back is now uncomfortable from the saddle I'm now not going to ride until the saddle is sorted (end of the month/payday) so she'll have a couple of weeks back rest.

However she is only 6 and the peeps at my yard tell me I need to ride or lunge her everyday?! (she was backed this time last year as 5yo)

So! What to do non ridden exercises for the next 2/3 weeks ??

She gets lunged on the pessoa 2x week. But I want to keep her mind working too ... I guess we could try longreining ...? Ideas on pole work ??

Or would it really matter if she had 3 weeks off doing nothing ??

I want to do the best by her so no nasty comments please :)

It won't hurt to give her a few weeks off!! as a 6 year old I gave my lad the odd week or two here and there and it did him the world of good. In fact he is 7 and had nearly 3 months off this summer when I had more surgery. again did him the world of good

Also I would be getting back checked too before I ride in new saddle

I like walking in hand....when I had to build my horse up slowly after a few months lame I alternated riding and leading. We went out with my friend and her dog for gentle walks...that way I got the exercise too!

I would get her back checked as well as the saddle, her back may be sore and just putting a new saddle on may not be enough.
I would keep some exercise going as she needs to keep her muscles in use otherwise the new saddle may not fit as they build up again.Pole work is useful as they work the back when they are used properly.
At her age she is going to be changing shape as she develops her topline and may need regular saddle/physio checks.

I agree, give her time off. My boy had months off on box rest, was very worried about him being a fruit loop as TB, but no, straight back into it, and all the better for it I think.

Ouch DD! Time off will be OK, as long as you handle her regularly and make sure she is minding her manners (leading nicely, stepping out of your way etc - the stuff I taught you when I came down for that lesson!). Turn her out as much as possible.

Best get a good vet physio or similar to check her before you do much work anyway, if she is objecting to the saddle she may be sore elsewhere too. Nycky Edlestone in Oxford is supposed to be v good.

Hope your ribs are better soon.

firstly, get his back sorted he may be sore where the saddle is ill fitting. Poles are very good for getting them to lift legs and work properly also try carrot exercises to get him stretching, join up and loose schooling is another way to keep his mind active but as before get chiro/physio out first just in case he has pulled a muscle etc OR leave him for the three weeks as he is only young and a break will probably do him good :)
