Do you mean for the rider? If you do then I've got some tips as I've just tought my OH to trot.

Get her to trot with no reins so she learns to use her body for balence, not the horse's mouth. Ask her to put her arms in different positions (make sure the horse won't spook at this) for example out to the side or on her head.

Try lunging the horse in trot (whilst she's riding), this is supposed to improve balence.

Ask her to trot with no stirrups as this will develop a more secure seat and hopefully will improve balence.

Thankyou for that - keep them coming guys, any thing she can do at home too, off the horse and outside lessons? I'm fed up of her being really upset (and expressing it in the characteristic "moody teenage face" way - lol)

One exercise I find extremely useful to teach to stand on the bottom step of the stairs, with their weight on the balls of their feet and heels out over the edge. Get her to assume the riding position, then lower her heels down as far as possible and come slowly back up again - gradually build up the number of repetitions. Great for balance and strengthening the necessary muscles!
