Hi, my mare braces herself on a bend - on a circle right her head and neck are to the left and vice versa. Any good exercises to remedy this would be gratefully recieved.
Thanks.

diamond does this either do one side rein up tighter the inside one.

or stand beside her and hold a carrot or polo round at her girth area if she beds to it her reward is treat

you can do this between her front legs to to make her flex down

hi
you need to get your horse off your leg :) (basicaly teach her to go sideways)

teach her from the floor to move away when you when you touch her where your leg would go when your riding
ask her nicely first then if she doesn't react use a stronger aid ie poke her till she moves then stop and pat her when she does the right thing ,repeat this till she's got it then get back on and repeat from the saddle
once you get this right you can keep your hands still but slightly holding to stop her simply running off and bend her middle out of the circle ,hence bending around your leg :)
a bit like leg yeilding out on the circle to create bend ,but be careful you don't get to much bend as you will end up loosing her out the outside shoulder so keep hold of the outside rein and you will get the meaning of "inside leg to outside hand"

you can't simply pull the head around with a shorter rein as she'll just fight it

it will take time to teach her but she will be much nicer and more balanced if you can get her to bend
good luck

ah u mean ridden i thought it was lunging .

i would work at a walk first do lots supplying exercises

tureets and castles is a good 1 teaches horse to bend and work both ways . another good one is working up the long side asking a bend to inside on one side of arena then asking for the opposite bend making sure your legs are controlling the hindquarters

also if you have cones weaving in and out giving and taking on the rein your asking to bend and controlling the pace with outside rein. serpentine and figure of eights i would lunge also this with the help of a pasoa would get horse working through .
15 meter circles too then when u are able doing 10 meters in each corner

another good one when you change the rein across a straight side through x instead of going straight on turn righ or left down the center line the the other end so its like a dog leg keeping quarters from swinging out you must do this at walk though to start with or horse will lose his balance

also on 20 metre circle try move her into a 15 meter then out again to get her to move away from the leg which is asking

when you get her moving away from your leg put a pole on the floor and take your time try get her to side pass( western term) along the pole without touching it

Diamond can sidepass right across the school in a sideways movement without moving forwards from B to E

every horse has a spot that they react to to teach them to go sideways from the ground its either round the girth area or round the shoulder when you press " the spot" horse moves away from the pressure

Thank you for the advice, anything I can do with my body or leg is better than the mouth as she just resists.
