I'm back into riding at the local riding school after a long break. I'm not as sore as I thought I'd be (I'm in my 60s now) but can't seem to get into the tap, tap with the lower leg on the girth to get the horse going. Its more flap, flap :(.

Can anyone recommend any leg exercises that could strengthen my legs to tap the horses side without losing balance.

Thanks!

Hi Cobalt

I'm no expert but if losing your balance is an issue then its probably not your legs you need to strengthen but your core. To use your legs effectively you have to have a good independent seat so that you can balance without hanging on to your reins or bracing yourself in your stirrups. I've been doing lots of work without stirrups in my lessons (I have wayward heels that want to go up and knees that want to grip!!) and I've found that this, coupled with some pilates and yoga, has really helped my legs be more effective. Have you had any lunge lessons yet? They're absolutely fantastic for helping to sort these problems out.

Best of luck!

Thanks Bodger :). No, I haven't had any lunge lessons yet, but will ask next time. I'm about 3 months into a new Pilates class so trying to work on the core muscles too.
