My best friend is thinking about getting a new pony (she's just lost her 37yr old mare who she'd owned for 20+ yrs). She is quite little and wants a pony just to love and hack out. Are these breeds sensible?
She's looking more to loan than buy, farrier said he knows someone who's got a new forest looking for a loan home. My friends got back problems so needs to be good to handle although she won't mind cheeky, must be 100% to ride though xx
Newfie's are good all rounder's, and generally sane enough to make a decent childs pony.
Exmoors (although this is just my own personal experiance) can be a tad bolshy and stubborn.
A good exmoor is worth its weight in gold. I have had lots and they have varied massively. I have had a few that have been great in all ways, and a few that have been flighty, nervous and difficult.
If your friend looks for a pony that is broken in and riding nicely, and the pony is advertised as being good to hack alone and in all the usual ways it is definitely worth a look. I wouldn't get a youngster as you never know whether it will be good or not!
The exmoor pony society have a website with a loan and sale section on it.
I own an Exmoor. He's 100% safe just a tad bargy on the ground. But most small ponies have their own cheekiness! Getting on him first time tonight since I broke my arm and hes had 7 months off to keep my welsh x company. Hes very laid back, had him since 4 yr old broke him in. Very happy to do what ever asked of him, just loves his food alot!
I knew an exmoor who was quite feisty, and my first loan pony was a new forest- very clever and took the mick for a while, but always been 100% to ride (although didn't like schooling very much!), cheeky but safe.
