Anyone ridden / known a holsteiner wb?

I am putting my Hanovarian mare to a cracking holsteiner stallion who I love, he's got such a kind temp. as well as fab jump and gorgeous paces. He's only had a few foals but of about 10 5yr olds, 3 of them are going novice BE this season and two others are county show horses so they seem to be real all rounders.

But, having never ridden one before what are peoples general views on them as a breed???

Any experiences etc welcomed

We've got one at the moment who we bought for OH to hunt, and he is such a honey! He's very straightforward and honest, has great paces and a huge and very powerful jump. He is by Lenard, and I'm going to be eventing him this season ready for OH to hunt properly next season; he just needs to learn to not always jump so big and so boldly (so that he doesn't scare OH)!

I used to not like them but think they've changed lots over recent years. Always used to be a breed which was reckoned suitable for professionals only but think they are much more mellow & lighter in the frame than they used to be.
Would seriously look at importing one now as a Sienna replacement.

My horse is by Canadian River (Holsteiner) and is very loving and willing; once she trusts you. She is very pretty (biased!) and sturdier for her size than KWPN's. She jumps well and is brave. Hope that helps - have had Hannoverian before and it may be that she is a mare but she is definitely much cleverer than he was!

My dad used to have one who I hunted after dad had packed in riding, he was a complete git in most ways possible!! definitely the naughtiest horse I've ever ridden!!

He would have been quite old now though (we had to have him PTS

) so maybe he was one before they had mellowed!

He was a stunning horse with lots of power, jumps and paces, just didn't quite have what you'd call a "genuine temperament"

They are not bad, they do have some Cleveland Bay in them if you look back at their breeding

Cool! I knew there must be a good reason why I liked ours so much.

That would also explain the huge appetite, appealing facial expressions and reluctance to get out of the stable and do any work.....

All very interesting thanks

My hanovarian mare is definitely clever, too clever !! But she is a fine example of a modern sport horse and we are hoping to show her at county level in broodmare classes this year, so I'm hoping for a nice baby from these two!

This stallion defo has a lovely temp, he sticks his head in your arms and you can really hug his head and he just stands there! He's my trainers stallion so I know him very well.

Here's a pic if your interested, not that good but gives you an idea, from what I have read / researched I think he is true to type in build, conformation etc:

Hi!
Mine is a hanoverian x holsteiner

In the 6 years Iv owned him, he's been an absolute saint, really sweet, but with 3 cracking paces and a really good jump! Also hacks, XC, and has done showing! He's not chunky in build either, but deffo not tb-like and spindly. He's also managed to live out most of the year and hardly costs anything to feed, pretty economical and hardy in that respect! So Id say you would end up with a pretty decent competition horse from those 2

whoops-hope i have done yr quotation justice but your description is just the same as mine for my horse - huge appetite for food but not for work but does love a good gallop! (And boy, can she move!)

Any I have ridden have been very nice, but then I am a warmblood fan. The stallion looks a very nice horse and if you know him personally then all the better! Remember he may not be holsteiner all the way and may have many other studbooks in his pedigree such as KWPN, hann, trak etc. Researching pedigrees is always very interesting. There are some very good breed specific forums you can go on when looking at pedigrees/studbooks which is fun.

Mine is TBx Hols (Cavalier) and he is fab! So bold, takes you to any jump but is a lapdog in the stable. I know each horse is different but am looking at Hols bloodlines to get a 2nd horse soon. Much prefer him to the KWPNs and Belgian WBs Ive sat on or dealt with.

Thinking about it - I think Morris was Hanovarian X Holstein, but was pink papered BWB. Would that make sense?? I don't know much about warm bloods!!

Having said all the bad things about him, and he really was a very naughty boy!!!, until I got my current horse I'd never ridden anything like him, we only saw his true talent when hunting (because that was all he wanted to do) but he really could jump ANYTHING, my dad has had some fantastic XC horses but still goes on about when he jumped a 6'6'' holly hedge on Morris and he didn't touch it.

He also found dressage very easy even though he only started at around 10.

He was perhaps just a bad egg!!

But he was the kind of horse that everyone remembers!
