Experienced Peeps

i'm a big believer in "you don't know until you try" - photographs can't really tell a story, it might just be a lazy horse who rests it legs alot without any underlying problems. if you like the look of it, and it ticks your other boxes then why not take the trip to see it just in case?

Agree. If you're worried and decide to go for him, get him vetted and make it clear to the vet that you want extra attention paid to that area. He looks a nice type though

He seems a nice chap; I don't think he is the nicest coloured I have seen. I don't usually have my head turned by them unless they have something special (like muffinino's Tit :D )

What would you want him for? What were you looking for before you saw him?

Re the leg resting, why don't you email them and ask for further ridden pictures? If they start giving funny excuses then alarm bells may ring, but there could be a reason why his ridden pics show him resting the leg - they have obviously taken the pictures in quick succession and not bothered to get him to stand up square.

The only other thing is to go and see him; pictures can only show so much. If you get there and he is hopping lame or it is obvious his leg is about to drop off or there is something wrong when ridden, then walk away - it may a wasted journey but at least you wouldn't have the "what if's" going round your mind. If nothing did come up when you went to see him and the pictures still concerned you, get him vetted. Simples :D

I wouldn't be too worried about that on its own. But he looks shod in front but not in the back - I wonder why. And his toes look long. Combined with that slightly off stance I would ask why. Also - why no photos of him moving?

An ex riding school horse, driven as a youngster but only ridden in the last 18 months and he is only 5 years old? He seems to have done a lot in a very short time. If he's 5 now he must have been in the riding school no later than 3 1/2 yrs old. And he'd been driven before that? Seems like way too much far too young to me. Or he is older than they say.

It's listed as a private seller - but the reason for sale is that they are "overstocked". Mobile only, no landline. The photos have not been taken on a yard - it looks like a car park. Could that be becuase the yard is actually a dealership? I'd be willing to bet they are listed as the only owner on a newly issued passport so no relaible history.

Persoanally I wouldn't even call - it has alarm bells all over it. But I am chronically cynical. If you love him then call - but keep your eyes open and take someone expereinced with you. Get your own vetting. Check him out on NEDS (as best you can if the passport is new.)

What would worry me is the statement "he was driven as a youngster but has only been ridden for the past 18 months". He's 5 years 1 month according to ad so since he was 3 and a half he's been ridden - how old was he when he was broken to drive?

If he's so safe why is he on a lunge line in the first photo?

His tail is set on very low, his quarters look odd but I guess you need to go and see him. If you want a quiet plod and he's as quiet as he's supposed to be then he might be just what you want. He's certainly not a lot of money.

I generally do not like the way he is standing but you cant really tell much from a couple of photos. Having bought a 5 year old horse that rested it back legs a lot - sort of sinking a bit at the back end I would be wary. I had it on trial and specifically said to vet - he always rests a back leg when still is that an indication of problem? and although he passed a 5 stage vetting - within six months he was diagnosed with wobblers. I believe they missed this on the vetting because about two weeks later I was riding down a steep hill and he dragged him back toes - I was told he lacked muscle tone and needed building up he also had severe muscle wastage on one side - again not picked up by vetting or saddler!! (saddle tipped over right from day one - I thought it was the saddle it turned out it was the horse). Turned out he was hit by a car as a 3 year old and this is likely to have damaged him neck causing the wobblers.

Maybe try him and see if its something he does habitually - If you have doubts then trust your instinct - I wish I had.

Fine and Dandy I have e mailed re more ridden pictures hopefully they will send me some soon.

Shay - Don't worry about being over cynical each point you have made is a valid one and i will have to have a think about them, i am going to ring the owners later and will discuss each issue.

Its v hard to find a cob which is suitable for a novice but has nothing dodgy about it

Can you explain re NEDS is it a horse register or something similar? sorry for the dumb question :o

Jemima - I think that will be one of the first questions i ask re age and what he has done

He looks a bit weak in the hindquarters and also has a slightly straight back leg.

For all that he looks a good sort and worth a proper look.
