My dog is at the start of 6 weeks crate rest due to a problem with his spine. Hopefully the rest will mend the problem.

Just wondered if anyone had any experience of this and any advice or tips on how to help him survive 6 weeks in a crate and be happy and comfortable. He has never been in a crate before let alone for 6 weeks bless him.

Thanks in advance

Tea and cake :)

Not had to crate rest a dog before, but I would make the crate as comfortable as possible - nice cosy bed, a cover over the top and perhaps a nice bone to chew on to while away the hours. If he is distressed to begin with, then something from your vet just to take the edge off if necessary.:) I would also place the crate where the most activity is, so he still feels part of the 'family'.:)

Thanks for the reply blazingsaddles. Vet doesn't want him moving much at all so no choice but to crate rest him. He is out of it at the moment from GA he had to have X-rays done but will see if he is brighter tomorrow to give him a chew.

Bless he has a nappy and overcoat thing on and a pad on the base of the crate just in case of a leak, with a thick towel under him and a fleece folded over like a pillow under his head poor dog :(

As above, make it comfy and with a view of the TV.
Frozen or mashed spud Kongs with all food given this way are a godsend and never underestimate the soothing powers of a marrowbone.
I often get dogs for rehab and I put their crate next to my sofa with easy view out of the patio window and of the TV. I use a crate a size up from a training crate.

When the TV is off a radio or CD is playing.

I have one on six weeks of it at the moment due to a spiral fracture of a femur. She is bedded on deep shredded paperin a space just big enough to stand and turn round in.It is three weeks almost now,and the x rays are very good. She bored..has bones to gnaw and is warm..but to get a good result she will just have to bear it.No outside stimuli,no exercise whatever..it`ll be worth it in the end.

Thanks s4s. Will get him a kong which should keep him occupied, also I have got him in my room overnight so I can keep a close eye on him but will move him for during the day, he can have the tv or radio on for company and luckily my mum is home during the day so he won't be on his own.

Thanks for replying EK. He has just woken up so have given him his meds for tonight which should make him sleep a bit more he looks so sad bless him. Fingers toes and everything else crossed that this will work for him :/
