Does anyone have an experiences of a bone chip/sequestrum healing then causing problems much later?
Due to reinjury or through no reason.

After horse seemed sound for quite a while (over a year or more)

My boy had one removed from just above the pastern about 10 months ago as it wouldn't heal with antibiotics. He developed laminitis from having a cast fitted and is only now starting some in hand exercises (but that's another story!).

He was never lame but had an opening above the coronet that wouldn't heal. A channel from the sequestrum to the opening could be clearly seen on the scan (where body was trying to expel the piece of bone). Once analysed the vet said he was on wrong antibiotics that's why it hadn't cleared up.

I was under the impression the body could reject them at anytime and treat as a foreign body but could well be wrong.

My horse recovered 18 months ago but is now very swollen and hot in the same area so Im worried he has reinjured it.

I suppose even if healed it will never be quite the same and could cause issues later.

I thought they could be re-absorbed by the body. Maybe he has knocked it and caused it to flare up again?

Could you ask the vet for a course of antibiotics to see if it clears up rather than having the expense of X-rays?

I will speak to my vet first thing in the morning.
Its been 18 months and he was fine.
Yes the body can reabsorb the bone chip.
So not sure what's up now.
He did damage the medial ligament too so maybe thats where the heat and swelling is coming from.
