My horse is booked in for Dectomax Injections next week and wondering if there is any side effects or what experiences people have had with these?

Thank you :)

I used it for mange on a pony I bought and then finished the bottle using it as a wormer on my bigger horses. There were no issues, but one of them chucked out some horrible short fat slug things, which I'd never seen before so it worked!

No side effects with my girl, she had 2 jabs, they didn't work so vet gave us switch instead which worked.
Is that the insecticide? I was thinking about trying it this year for my pony. I've tried so many 'natural' lotions and creams and none of them really stop the itching. Did you have any side effects to it? The jabs didn't work for him either.

I have used occasionally with limited success but a word of warning; beware of where you are at in your worming cycle. I know of horses who have had issues after being wormed in close proximity to having ivermectin injections.

Yes the insecticide, no side effects, worked really well.

Dectomax is an "ectin". wormer like ivermectin, not an insecticide, though it can work on mange, which is dug into the skin

Are you thinking of deosect? Dectomax is an injection, not a lotion.

Thanks. Do you put it on the skin? I read that someone put it on the rug.

Chianti I think you need to get clear what you're talking about. This thread was asking about dectomax, not deosect. The person you asked referred to injections, dectomax. You are asking about a lotion, do you mean deosect?

I meant the insecticide called Switch. Dopeydapple referred to Switch in her reply, which I'm thinking about using for my pony.

I've used dectomax on quite a few horses - I like them with feather as do mites annoyingly.

Never had any bad reactions but also haven't seen it work particularly well. Its quite a thick substance to inject so you might get some swelling around the injection site.

Yes. It turned out to be one of Old Dobbin's asthma triggers. Changed to using Selsun 2.5% shampoo, from knees/hocks to the soles of his feet on day 1, day 5 and day 10, to catch any hatchlings. It was given for feather mite, and didn't work particularly well.

I've used Switch on two sweet itchy horses. The first year in my gelding it worked brilliantly, then one year it was mediocre but better than anything else, then last year it was ok for my gelding but worked marvellously for my itchy Shetland. This was coupled with her coming in at might too so think the Switch and less exposure to midges helped too. Coming in at night it nit an option for my gelding.

I've had Dectomax injections for my fluffy cobs feather mites too and it's worked well. One year she had two injections, then a few later just one as there was a shortage, this autumn she had one, but it didn't work alone so she has another within the recommended time and it's worked beautifully again. I does sometimes leave a large bump on her neck but she's very sensitive to injections etc

Thanks. I hate sweet itch so much. Pony has other health issues but if I could wave a magic wand and stop one of them, it would be the sweet itch. It makes their lives so miserable.

It did help with some of the stamping of my lad when I first got him (and didn’t know about cpl) but frankly the cost outweighed the benefit. I get the same results now with clipping and decent shampoo and regular deosect spraying.

Our vets don’t offer dectomax injections any more - they were having problems getting enough in to be able to do two injections plus quite a few horses became really needle shy afterwards. They now offer spot on treatment for mites instead.

Mine had two injections and one of steroids for her bad mites. The first one often doesn't appear to work apparently which was my experience but after the second she was right as rain. Never needed it again and she had no side effects.

I've had three horses with lami, one of which I lost due to.it, and two with sweet itch and I can hand on heart say I'd have a horse with lami over sweet itchy every time, it's heartbreaking and makes them so so miserable 😟

Have used this with no ill effects. Now though, changed feed to Mallemash from Simple Horse Feeds, Cetreban cream daily on backs of knees and clip legs. Mallanders has cleared up in a way I have never seen before.
