Basically my horse has been on Prednidale for about a month and half for a liver problem, his bloods have improved so it's obviously doing its job.

I have noticed some changes with him though, most are to be expected but recently he seems to have really muscled up around his withers and along his neck- he's only been back in work for a week! And these steroids are meant to be anti-inflammatory not for muscle building! Has anyone else experienced this, or any other side effects?

Thank you

Is she on the 5mg or 25mg tablets, and how many a day out of interest, trying to gauge if my boy is on a high dose, he's 17hh and on 24 tablets a day which are 25mg

I have no idea about how they affect horses or humans, but in dogs they can cause excessive thirst/urination and abnormal fat deposits. Could it be fat deposits on his crest?

Does google bring anything up?

Thank you tankgirl1

I didn't see anything mentioned on google in relation to horses just dogs and cats like you mentioned.

And I suppose it could be fat deposits, he has been out at grass a lot recently since the weathers been nice. So potentially the combination of good grass, exercise and the steroids could have done something, it's just so weird, everything seems to have happened too quickly! I thought maybe the muscling around his withers could have been swelling caused by his saddle since his shape had changed whilst being ill, but he's not sore at all there and there's no heat! Very strange.

I think that's my best option, pretty sure they are getting annoyed with my constant questions, but I've never had a horse on medication for an extended period of time, and any change of normal behaviour I get in a flap, panic and call the vets. Oh well, I suppose I'm not the first! Thank you though!

No, that's what they are there for and I'm sure your vet will tell you the same - Any worries or questions give them a call :)

Steroids are great at 'curing' things, but can potentially cause issues, so I am sure your vet would feel much happier being kept in the loop as it were :)

Yup phoned her today and she said its all normal. Steroids effect horses in quite a big way so changes that seem odd aren't anything to worry about. And she also wants him blood tested sooner to see if we can get him off them, which is good :) fingers crossed for good results

That's great :) Thanks for updating. Glad the vet has put your mind at rest, and as you say fingers crossed re the bloods :)
