Can someone explain the difference, in how they work, between loose ring snaffles and fixed ring snaffles (eggbutt and full cheek etc.)

Any pros and cons for each?

Looking at changing my lad's bit as I'm not liking the nutcracker effect of the single joint but I'm not sure if the rings, fixed or not, I should change/try out?

A loose ring will give more play in the mouth, although some with fleshy lips are better with a fixed ring in case of pinching. A fixed ring is stiller in the mouth and gives a slightly more direct aid, a full cheek will also help to turn the horse's head when pressure is applied to the opposite rein.

Depends what the horse is happier with really.

If you want to take away the nutcracker, pinching action of the snaffle inside the mouth then you would be better off with a lozenge, double link type of mouthpiece.

Loose rings are a bit more effective, but then it depends on the horse. My boy won't listen at all in a fixed ring snaffle yet goes wonderfully in a loose ring snaffle. Full cheek snaffles, I'm assuming you mean a fulmer? Are supposed to act as helping steering and keeping the bit stiller I'm the horses' mouth.

If you don't like the single joint, perhaps try a French link?

Have been wanting to try either a french link or lozenge as RI suggested but wasn't sure if a loose ring or fixed ring would be better! I may get both and try them out to see which he prefers! Thanks
