My old boy's sarcoids on his sheath have exploded. They have done this once before and as before it is quite gross! He doesn't seem to give a monkeys but I'm rather freaked out by the hole that has been left behind. Just wondered really whether anyone out there had experience of this and had any suggestions as to how to treat the hole?

Can't help but visualise a little sarcoid lying out on the grass in the field waiting for Mr Fox.....

Any how, ideas and solutions gratefully received.

My mare had a huge one that fell off leaving a rather nasty hole.

I treated it with dermobion at the time and it healed really well, although you can see a small scar. Never did find the scarcoid though.....

Ring the vet in the morning and ask for there advice over the phone, this costs you nothing. Poor you, I have a mare that suffered from sarcoids they are not very nice. The only advice I can give is keep the hole clean from infection.

my mare has a sarcoid between her back legs and one on her chest.. vet said to keep an eye on them but if there is no change they shouldnt be a problem.. just hope the one on her hind legs doesnt drop off as that's gonna be a hard place to heal

Firstly I think I'd be pleased and then I'd ring the vet! Keep it clean - flies shouldn't be a problem yet - and keep your fingers crossed that's the last you see of it!

I have never heard of them exploding before......

I used to look after a horse with a big sarcoid on his nose. One day it looked really weepey so I had a poke about and found lots of little black things that looked like apple pips inside. I fished them out and not long afterwards it dried up and went away. It was gross but rather fun pulling them out - maybe it wasn't a sarcoid after all!

Hi

My mare had one on the side of her face about 10 years ago. It grew outwards and like you say just sort of exploded and dropped off leaving a bit of a hole (it was the size of a 10pence piece I would say), I dabbed a bit of diluted tea tree oil and it healed a treat, no scarring and it never returned.

Thanks folks, glad to see I'm not alone here. Hole looks healthy (as it can be) and I'm keeping it clean. I guess my biggest problem will be stopping in sealing up from the outside first.

Barley still seems oblivious although that can be frequently said of him nowadays! Daft old man spends a considerable amount of his time on another planet.

Just one general question for you folks regarding what you should or shouldn't use on sarcoids. Any advice much appreciated as always, general idea I was aware of was to not use anything irritating but quite what that covers I'm not sure.

This happened to my coblet some years ago. He developed a sarcoid on his sheath so I asked a local homeopathic vet to have a look. When I brought the cob in from the field for the vet to examine, found that the blasted sarcoid had fallen off, leaving a hole, much the same as yours, I suspect. Apologised to the vet 'cos there wasn't anything for him to see but I did say he was welcome to search the paddock for the missing sarcoid

He was OK about it, and I seem to remember he left some tiny pills for coblet. Also kept the hole clean and dry, and it healed over in about 10 days. This must have been about 8-10 years ago, and there's been no recurrence since

Ooopps! Bet thats put the mockers on it now!

If they start to blister/bleed they need surgically removing.
My other horse had some under his legs/sheath area when he was a younster, a couple of the smaller ones went on there own. Vet did a mild sedation (while he was stood up) and snipped them off, a few stitches and all was done.

Never came back, no scars ....vet did a fantastic job which took all off half an hour.
