hello peeps ,... hope your all fine ,
ive not been on line for such along time!
im in desperate need of some advice and help.
my mare is coming up 3 end of may ,.
shes turning into a nightmare! shes sometimes fine with me . on my own but if someone else is there she seems to be jelous.
im at my wits end as to what to do .
im not an expert in this as ive never had such a young horse .
any help would be certainly grateful

i can hold her by the lead rope and she tries to kick me with her front leg .
the other day the farrier came and hes done her from day dot .and she went to cow kick him and then went for him again twice ,,,
she will let me do the rugs etc . but if shes not inthe mood she will let you know .
i know shes still only a baby but a big baby at that !

My boy use to do that. It is certainly trying to be dominant. It is a testing time for her. She will test the boundries Unfortunately it is time for you to teach your mare that she has respect you. Try doing some in hand work. Reward her when she has been. Regardless of what mood they are in the have to respect the handler.

My 4 yr old is going through the same teenage phase at the moment. Bitme on the back the other day as i walked past her stable and now all of a sudden decides to try and bite and kick when i do her rugs or something she doesnt like !! Im just been nice but firm . They all go through it !

I just try to be firm but fair with her, I'm hoping to get on top of it before she gets any bigger/stronger!

yeah that was taken back end of last yr before the cold weather really appeared ..
shes roughly about 15.1
ive had her since she was 1 month old .
i bought the mum too
but shes out on loan .
any help or advice is defo more than welcome .

3 or 33 I'm afraid that striking out at you with a front leg is a no-no. It could easily escalate too. I'd have a crop with me at all times and if she strikes out, strike back very fast and smack her sharply on the leg she struck out with. Then do nothing more and carry on as normal. It's over, finished, forgotten. That's how another horse would sort her out. I'd do the same for the farrier.

I mistaked this behaviour for naughtyness (front kicking and biting) and unfortunatly it was the begininings of his kissing spines - I put it down to him being grumpy and cold so put another layer on. Just a thought especially in the ridden horse...

thanks people for the advices..
i will defo carry a crop with me .
i will try another layer too . if shes cold .,

its a bit of a bugger that im down there on my own 99% of the time and i dont want to get hurt .
when im mucking out she will stand at the stable door looking in and snorting and be inquisitive of what im doing .
i dont know if its a stage shes going through.
im hoping that one of my friends will be coming soon to start some work with her just to teach the manners and respect .,
i dont believe that she has behaived this way as no one has ever been nasty to her.
