My mare came in from the field 4 days ago with green mucus in the corner of her left eye. After various recommendations I bought an eye drop solution to treat it. It seems to have cleared up. However, on Sunday, ALL OF A SUDDEN, gushes of thick (clear) discharge came out of her right nostril, very odd. I asked one of the knowledgeable people on the yard what it was and they said nothing to worry about.

When I went to see her yesterday evening, there was a splat of it on the floor beneath her and she had lots of dried bits up her nose.

It could be the new batch of hay - literally just been cut - I have been soaking it though.

She isn't lame, coughing or swollen anywhere so no idea what to think. Vet? or being a little too paranoid?!

Not sure on diagnosis as wouldnt like to do with without advice from vet but they have a tear duct in their nostrils so if she has an infection problem in her eye maybe its being evident through coming out of her tear ducts through her nostril???

BTW wouldnt treat any eye condition myself would always get vet

Thanks guys - I do have one small point to add, that is if we called the vet out every time our horses had a limp or runny nose we would be in millions of pounds worth of debt.

I wonder if anyone can kindly provide me with their experiences so I may make an informed decision....

My mare hasn't had the eye discharge however she is suffering with one nostral discharge. My vet came out and she has a blocked sinus and is on antibiotics. So I woul;d atleast make a phone call to your vet

Err, if you don't have any idea what could be wrong with your horse, I wouldn't take too long to either call the vet for advice,or get the vet out. If anyone on here can help you then good, otherwise you have no choice, whatever the cost.
I'm not to sure on feeding just cut hay either, I'd check if that is ok to do, just in case.

I soak it well and leave it over night. As it is all we have for the moment, this is the best I can do.

Last night her nose seemed to be clear and her eye is looking allot better.
