Poor horse has damaged his eye, not sure how, but it's a 5p sized ulcer :(
He's got eye drops and bute (had vet out as soon as I saw him), and is on restricted turnout (he's in during the day anyway), as in if Sun is out, he is in.. So that just leaves night fall, and in before sun rise - not exactly ideal, so he's being kept in unless it's over cast.
Has anyone got any tips? I.e, fly mask (maybe cover the side where his bad eye is?) I've never had a horse with a bad eye before.

my silly mare did this but was to be kept on box rest for a week with a fly mask on at all times. i pit a normal.mask on and covered up the injured side with duct tape!

A guardian mask would be ideal. I had two when the horse I had a share in had uveitis and couldn't have any sun getting into his eyes. The bit that goes over the eye can be removed, so if you wanted, you could leave the cover over his bad eye and take the one off his good eye. They are not cheap, but are robust and will last for a long time.

ditto this. Barry spent a summer having atropine in one eye every few days which dilated his pupil and left him vulnerable to getting a burned retina. Used a premier equine mask because the mesh is nice and stiff and it sits flat across their faces so not much light leaks through to the taped up side. Worked great and if you have a sewing machine and zigzag round the edge it's washable too.
Got a couple more masks from PE the other week at 40% off

Hi, My previous horse had a eye ulcer. He wasnt allowed outside for 4 months and then had a fly mask on continuously. You could put duck tape over the side with the ulcer to keep the light out.

What drops has the vet given you for the eye? Have they tried serum from his blood to help the healing in the eye?

If the attachment works its a link to all the photos taken during my horses ulcer

If you have any queries about his eye feel free to pm me.

Hi, I used Equilibrium hoods for both ulcers and Uvietis as they filter out 85% of the UV which is whats going to be your problem.
A guardian mask as someone suggested would be great but £100 is a lot to spend on a hood! especially an ulcer is not a long term thing
I bought a full face mask and stiched the nose cover part (which is removeable) as an extra layer the bad side. Your doing the right things though, Posts make me cringe when people don't call the vet to eye problems first. x

Thanks for the replies :) this video is from yesterday http://www.flickr.com/photos/46498328@N08/9408435895/in/photostream/
Significant improvement I think, I have a HY eye mask as well as the Roma earless mask (this one was a failure, he rubbed it, trying to get it off), the HY eye mask, despite originally not being happy in it, he seemed happier to wear, no rubbing etc.. Going to Duck tape it tonight and let him have a night out, as it's given for overcast and raining right into mid morning.
He'll be in just after sun rise (have spoke to vet, who's happy with his progress). My last experience with him being in full time, wasn't the best. Luckily I have a yard mate who's up at the crack of dawn, so I'm working around her and the weather atm. I don't think he'll be getting much time out if the mask doesn't work.

We have had a couple of horses in the yard that had eye problems. One with a nasty ulcer. We used this for all outdoor activities - field, walker, galloping: http://www.saddlery.biz/racing-equi...uipment/zilco-airlite-hood-mesh-pacifier.html

We duct taped over the bad eye, lined the inner with a bit of softban and electric tape as it could rub when the horse got sweaty. They were stabled in the darkest stable in the yard and basically lived in a UV fly mask for the rest of the time.

One of them did get a funky coloured contact lens for a while too!

You know, that's exactly what i've just been looking at!
I.e. Flymasks.. I just have to find one that doesn't rub my horses eyebrows.. I now have two that just don't give enough space around the eyes :( Hence why I went looking for "Goggles for horses" and it came up with that as a suggestion. Just abouts to place an order :)
Thanks EKW xx

I second this, my are had recurring ulcers and uveitis, they also do a ride on mask
, failing that the cashel fly hoods protect the eyes from around 50 % of the sun.

I stitched a patch to the inside of my TB's flyveil.

It didn't cost me anything as l had the fly veil and the material sitting at home.

He's being a right little monkey with the eye drops, it's taking two people to administer them. Despite that, his eye looks really good today, we're now on day 7. Still waiting for pacifier to arrive, at this rate he'll be better before it arrives! Might ring them tomo and chase it up.
I think my lad is trying to tell me he's really ok now, just stop mauling me lol!
