Whats the best and easiest way to put eye cream in a horses eye when your on your own and horse won't keep still or keep eye open!??

My mare has an ulcerated eye (old injury scar tissue has flared up with flies) and vet has been to see her and left cream today for me to put in. When she originally injured her eye she was sedated every few days to get the cream in, insurance doesn't cover the eye now so trying to keep costs down by putting the cream in myself.

Any advice or easy tricks to get the cream in would be greatly appreciated!

Disposable gloves - squirt onto finger and rub in the eye

Don't use the tube or you risk stabbing them in the eye, especially if they are not co-operating.

Also keep gloves for puppy poo and cleaning, unless conjunctivitis, then just for poo.....

Headcollar on, use the edge of your thumb to pull down the lower lid and other hand to hold the upper lid in place, rub cream on from finger.

Luckily my girl was SO cooperative, she got a treat before and after as well.

1.Teach horse to lower head from a gentle pull on bottom of headcollar.

2. put feed on the floor

3. put lead rope under one foot so horse can only raise head to shoulder height- when they feel the pull they should lower again.

4. peel back/ squeeze lids to show membrane/ inside of lid- if horse raises/ moves head keep hand on the face, so they realise they can't get rid of you.

5. don't rush, and as soon as you can see the membrane put in a big squirt!!!

I'm doing it twice a day ATM
