Eye infection... Recommendations

My baby boy has an eye infection... The last two days he has had a small amount of gunk, and I have been bathing in sterilised water, although today there was more... I'm not happy about it, his eye is not red, but the colour of what's weeping out is opaque creamy green... Yuck. I'm off to boots tomorrow to get some a eye ointment. My discussing with my mother this is a tear duct infection since the eye is not bloodshot any reccomendations for topical over the counter treatments? Obviously if there is no change soon I will be getting the vet. But I plan to treat it there times s day tomorrow and see where we go from there.
 
If it was me I'd get a vet sooner rather than later - eye problems are one of the few things I'll have a vet straight out for... the three most common causes of 'gunky eyes' are conjunctivitis, foreign body (causing ulcers/scrathes) ,and uveitis. The first two aren't particularly serious - uveitis on the other hand if you leave it a few days can result in needing the eye removing! Dramatic I know, but I work at a vets so have seen it a few times, so I am probably just paranoid!

Believe me, I'm well aware of the potential severity of eye issues... I'm pretty sure my mother has seen a few in her day that's why I've spoken with her... I will also be speaking to the vets tomorrow, but I know the stuff that they will give me will be no different than what I can buy over the counter in the first instance. As I said and no offence... I'm not asking for advice on how to handle this... I'm asking for recommendations on topical treatments.
 
Vet first. Its not cut on the leg you can slap a bit of sudocrem on - fiddling about with human over the counter stuff is not a good idea for eyes.

Green/yellow gunk = infection - this needs controlling asap. You dont want uveitis or worse developing!

If you must DIY then I use eyebright - the herb- and make into a tincture to bathe the eye in.
 
Oh ffs! I give up! Ask a simple question and get everyone treating you like your a frigging numpty... Don't worry about answering the post when you so obviously can't even read the bleeding question!
 
Get some chloryphenicol eye drops/oitment from a pharmacist - it's exactly what the vet would give you if it's conjuctivitis but will cost a lot less. Just tell them it's for you.

If the eye isn't swollen, sore and fully open I don't think a vet is necessary - providing the eye drops work.

Although I did do a double take on your post as I thought for a minute you meant your son until the bit about the vet came in:)
I recently had Mrs Vet out (ON A SUNDAY!) to Mr Very Poorly Swollen Eye, she flushed it with sterile water and then used some...grrrr can't remember the name...but it came out green from his nostril to show no blockage to the tear duct. She said blockages can cause all sorts of sinus probs...
She gave me the above ointment...but just warned against accidentally poking said beast in the eye and causing damage.....I was on my own so no one to hold his head still....so I used a soft gauze pad and ran the oitment over the lids....and it went in.
He also had antibios......as a precaution and it did take 3 days to go back down...
But hey....as you rightly pointed out...you know your beast....and if worried will call the vet.

mine would get a bit gunky in his old age and when the wind and cold got his eyes so I would saline bathe and put in Chloramphenicol eye drops bought over the counter. If you find a nice pharmacist the drops or ointment are good. Then vet if not improved after couple days. They will clear up bacterial quickly.

Golly...don't mean to 'criticise' but Mrs Vet said saline for the eyes is a no no...too harsh...Not me saying this but vet.....sorry if you are a vet...I am not. Sterilised water is best. Same for human eyes too.

Its spelt Chloramphenicol actually (sorry to be pedantic)

I would phone vet and get their advice, which may well be to try some chloramphenicol cream or drops first. Which of course as you know you can buy over the counter at the pharmacy. Golden Eye ointment is one brand name.

Warm salt water eye baths are also good. I used to use boiled water from a flask with salt added and apply very liberally with cotton wool once water was cool enough.
 
Reading back try the chloramphenicol drops first if you say they are for a horse or dog etc they may not sell them to you. If they are for your relative who has a very sticky eye etc.My local pharmacist is very good. Chloramphenicol.....spelt correctly! Dont buy optrex etc

Ha no offence taken but I havent lost a patient in 30 years yet. But there is always a first time. 0.9% saline is fine if we are to be correct. But most of time I mix it my self for the animals. Its more to clean the gunk away. Then the drops go in. No wiping after the drops.
 
Just an update for anyone who was interested... Bens eye was a lot better this morning :D. Still looks like it has been weeping a bit today but no yucky colour so it must be flushing itself through, anyway I've bathed it in salt water, put some chlora watsit ointment on, and wiped the bottom of the eye around the tear duct with Vaseline to protect it from getting sore.

Hopefully it's all good :) looks so much better today :)

Think this was a bit over the top - people were just giving you their experiences and opinions!

To answer your question, I am one who will not mess around and will call the vet immediately if it isn't just a clear weepy eye [you know what you can get when the wind whips across you].

I won't mess around with eyes, and I have seen a lot of people who have delayed with the best intentions but it has meant that horse has been in a great deal of pain and a few have ended up [in severe cases] having their eyes removed.

I speak from experience as I had to nurse my then yearling through an eye ulcer and secondary uveitis. I knew nothing of eye problems and called my vet immediately. If it is a cut on the leg etc and depending on the severity, I will treat myself unless it obviously needs a vet, but eyes I won't delay on. If you are friendly with your vet, could they pop by en route just to do a quick whistle stop?

Hope all recovers soon :)

Yes, you may think so, but my post clearly said any recommendations for topical over the counter treatments... Not can I have your experiences and opinions please... I do wish people would read the opening threads properly. Anyway, vast improvement overnight so should be fine. And again as I said in my opening post I will get the vet out if it gets worse or no better... So if it starts to get bad again I will act.

As I said on your other thread, people generally respond with their experiences when questions are asked. No one had said anything particularly out of turn to you. No need to be so spikey about it - if you think people aren't responding to the crux of the issue, why not say thanks for your post - can you recall what treatments you ended up using etc?

Ooh, just to add [as I realised I forgot when I posted originally *smacks head*] my vet had said to me previously if ponio has got conjunctivitis or similar [they tell me after they've visited] that the eye drops like Golden Eye from the pharmacies are good for clearing it up - chloronphenical [sp?] as others have said is also what vets use and what was prescribed to my boy. Just be careful about mentioning to pharmacies as to what it is for - I've not had an issue before but friends have if you mention it is for a horse!!! :D

Thank you, I got some chloro.. What's it stuff this morning for him just as a precaution, and have treated him with it today... Thought I'd get lots of indignant head tossing off him, but he was very good patient :) I was prescribed some by the vet as a precaution when a lot of horses went down with gammy eyes in the summer but since my 2 didn't get infected eyes I never ended up using it and gave it to another livery when her boy needed it!

I wasn't so spiked to begin with... I did post before my narky post reiterating my question :( then I suppose I must have just got hormonal:rolleyes::D

Yeah me too, :D just want to be out enjoying the world with him now he's had his massage, clip and teeth done :):) hopefully go out for a ride tomorrow if all is looking well :D

Glad he is ok today. They use this on tiny babies for infected eyes, very common treatment. Viral eye infections are more of a pain to deal with. Hope you have nipped it in bud. Amazing they dont get them more with mud rolling and flies etc in summer.
 
Bless you, thank you for that totally unrelated post... I'm pretty sure that a whacking great splinter would have resulted in a bloodshot eye... Thanks for sharing:D
 
That's how my horses Uveitis started, even the vet twice diagnosed conjunctivitis. Mine had flare ups every 6 weeks or so, bloody nightmare! Glad your horse is showing signs of improvement.
