Eye injuries

hello, so i got my horse in from the field early today and noticed his eye was squinting, almost as though it was effort for him to fully open it. A couple hours later it started tearing, only clear watery and no goo! He is normally very alert with his eyes, and loves looking around at everything! :D and he still did this, but it just definitely looked as though it was effort for him to open the eye fully. Pretty sure there was no swelling, and couldn't really tell if it were cloudy as was worried about poking or shining a light in it. We told people on the yard and they didn't really say anything. We think he might have had a fight with his field neighbour as he had a patch of hair missing on his nose too, and his neighbour is not particularly the friendliest.
Anyway, typical worried mum, googled eye injuries, and now worried because we didn't call the vet out?? :( anyone had any experiences with eye problems? do some just clear up on their own? If it hasn't changed tomorrow, definitely going to get the vet out!

My agreement with the vet for my mare is if the eye won't open immediately after bathing with warm water then to give them a call.

We have ongoing problems with conjunctivitis which they will allow me to treat without a visit, but personally I think eyes are too high risk not yo involve the vets.
 
Eye injuries need a vet ime. They can be very painful and the damage can be long-lasting without treatment. I am afraid that I would ring now for advice and if the vet thinks it needs to be seen tonight, just pay the out of hours callout and consider it a learning experience. My mare managed to give herself an ulcer on her cornea, we think that she had poked herself in the eye, on something like a nettle. She had a week's course of treatment and was absolutely fine afterwards.
 
I would get the the vet out if your really not sure about eyes don't take the chance, my horse came in yesterday with a huge swollen eye, I did initially think it was an infection from flies but he was so sore and the eye looked cloudy I am glad I got the vet as he had scratched the surface of his eye, his had treatment and it looks almost normal today.
 
This happened to my lad, i got the vet and he was very lucky not to have lost his eye, he punctured it on a thorn in the hedge.
He had to stay in for a month with eye drops 3 times a day then when he went out he had to wear a guardian mask for some time. Get the vet to have a look, better safe than sorry x
 
thanks everyone! He's doing ok, the eye is no longer squinting or teary, it's just very very bloodshot. So not really sure what it is? Called the vet and waiting for a reply!

When in doubt get the vet. Eye injuries are not to be pondered over get vet out as it could be the start of something nasty. In the meantime put clean fly hood on, till the vet has seen it.
