Are the eyes sore?
How much gunk?

I would only wipe with a clean cloth and boiled water (cooled down). If it is lots of gunk, the eyes are sore or you just aren't happy then get a Vet to look.

My vet suggests cold black tea as the first step if they are just a bit mucky due to flies but if you are unsure then get the vet as eyes are too precious to risk messing about with.

If the eye is constantly running there may be a blocked tear duct which can be flushed out by the vet. One here needs this doing most years.
