I have just seen a post on a facebook group about someone seeing 2 horses on the pavement and a learner driver "who did not pass them wide enough". People commenting saying complain to the driving school/instructor etc etc, but is it just me who thinks the horse riders are in the wrong?? surely you shouldn't be riding on the pavement? obviously dont know the whole story, but if a rider is on the pavement non horsey people would just assume they are out of the way/no need to pass wide? but some of the comments were soo patronizing, one said "when ever I am hacking and a learner driver passes wide and slow I give a massive thankyou to reward them for their behavior" reward them?!?!? they aint dogs!! wow I really should not go on these groups!!!

You absolutely should not be riding on the pavement (I would only do so in an emergency to get out of the way of something big and even then only if no pedestrians were about).

I agree, no rider should be on the pavement unless it was unavoidable - horse spooking or to get past something. Most learner drivers learn in towns and built up areas and sometime never meet horses until they've passed their test. So I think they should be rewarded with a big thank you from us riders. My neighbour is a driving instructor and said she now regularly takes her learners to where they are most likely to meet riders for the experience and so they know how to pass wide and slow and not panic.

yes I agree you should say and extra big thankyou to people such as learners etc but to say "to reward them for their good behavior" just made me cringe?!

well it's hardly exclusive to learners is it?! no idea why they have a bee in their bonnet now, i have much more of a problem with tractors and lorries passing too close and fast.

I think some horse riders are, quite frankly dreadful people who seem to thin the who world revolves around them and their horses!

I will step onto the pavement on occasion (if no people on it!) to maybe let a car past if I am approaching a bend or something. I did this the other day in fact as would rather assist drivers pass me than have them dawdling behind me needlessly.

Too many horse riders just like to moan for the sake of moaning. It's never THEIR fault!!

THIS.

I see this so often and it drives me mad. Low flying aircraft- they are merely there to annoy riders, and not to practice potentially lifesaving flying techniques. That horses have so much right to be on the road that it's fine to hold drivers up when with a little more common sense they could pass you. It goes on and on. For the vast majority of us, horses are a hobby, not a job.

Also agree with you on hopping onto the pavement for a brief period to let cars past when you can see there are no pedestrians.

I think for putting my ramblings so concisely, that you can be my hero of the day! :p

Ah yes, but I seem to miss letters off my words! :) I blame the computer (and the ads on this H&H forum) that seem to cause me typing problems!

I just get fed up with horse riders moaning about things and blaming others for their misfortune!
