Why is that on so many fb pages when people ask horsey health/behaviour questions etc does everybody respond with, 'oh that's perfectly normal no need to phone the vet mine does it all the time', leave it a few wks and see if its still alive its fine because my friends pony does it definatly nothing wrong, it's definatly not bobbin it's head and trying to get you off because it's lame its just happy to be with you mines the same. Nobody ever seems to suggest their may be a serious medical reason why a horse acts a certain way and if they do they are shot down by a million people saying they are evil for suggesting there could be a problem because don't forget people, mine does it and ive never had a vet out, so its ok!! X-(

Rant over! :)

.....and if it has skin cancer then toothpaste will do the trick! My personal favourite.

Closely followed by the favourite diagnosis of a vet who is flavour of the month in these parts but who wouldn't get with half a mile of any of mine...the famous twisted ovary. Let me just untwist this twisted ovary for you and all will be well. Hasn't worked? Well then my spider senses tell me that your horse has ulcers and a congested liver. Ultrasound to look at the ovary? I don't need it. Scope to look at the ulcers? Not necessary. Blood work to confirm liver problems? No need.

Ah good old pig oil, did you know that its also a cure for lameness! Lol

yes it actually is that chit chat page i had in mind! What goes on in some peoples heads is beyond me. They dont want answers they just want reasurrance that its ok because nobody else calls the vet for a half dead horse either! :(

I'm quick new to the horsey world so most of the time find those pages SO helpful (reading other peoples posts and gather lots of different opinions lol). But even I don't understand why you'd ask facebook when it's completely free to speak to the vet on the phone... And then if they feel the need to visit, they will!
Touch wood, have only had the vet out for vacs so far, but if I ever had any doubt that something was wrong, I'd be straight on to the vets!! And those people must have doubt or they wouldn't ask. X

I would be upset too Rowan at people who fail to call a vet if there is doubt, but have never seen the page you refer to, and not sure I want to now!!!

I only follow Blue Cross, Redwings and WHW, plus BHS and there really is helpful advice on those pages!

Horses are two a penny these days. Doesn't matter if one dies. Just go and rescue another one and hope it lasts longer than your previous one. :D

Its terrible someone posted a video of a horse that looked very off/lame so i questioned it, but aparently it wasn't lame, it was just off balance because it was pleased to see her!!!!!!!! seriously WTF!!?!

Good grief.

I have to say, you don't get much better on here though.

Think that's a bit harsh Amy.
Most long term posters on here give good advice.

As for the site mentioned I joined when looking for a new horse. However I was so horrified I couldn't stay

Ah sure it'll be grand. Just slather it in aqueous cream/pig oil and sulphur, and give it a wipe with a used tea bag. Sorted, lol :p

Sorry but I take offence to that - I've used both PO&S and tea bags to great effect and my vet has been happy with the results. The problem isn't using home remedies - it's using them properly and knowing when to call the vet if they are not working. How many times on here have you seen someone suggesting that an owner lets their horse graze in a hedgerow and let the horse select which herbs it needs? In fact it often aids the vet as certain herbs are for certain ailments and can help the owner suggest to the vet what may need investigating.

Take as much offence as you like, makes no difference to me!

Fact is POAS and tea bags get prescribed for anything and everything on there, whether it makes sense or not, and whether a vet is required or not. So as I say, I REALLY don't give a monkeys if you're offended or not, it was a valid comment about the content of that page.

I think most people on the thread saw the humour in my comment, I wasn't 'blaming' home remedies at all, but it's clearly gone right over your head.

That page is terrifying, there was a girl who posted a video of her horse refusing to jump a large fence and she was saying OMG SO NORTY I WAS ON A PERFECT STRIDE.

if that's a perfect stride i have a left ******* called Jeremy. She then went on to post a series of equally scary videos that apparently showed she could ride. terrifying.

The 'my horse decks me all the time, but i bought him with his saddle 6 months ago so it defo fits and it's defs not that' brigade.
And the amount of people posting photos of horses who just look like they've not done as well as they could over winter and then the 'now' picture which is of a borderline obese animal and everyone is on about how much better they look!

also see a lot of photos of horses who i'd be thinking of cutting down the feed a bit and poster is asking how to get more weight on it?!

On this forum, it seems to be if there's an query at all about a horses health / behaviour then a bullet is usually the advised answer!

Haha also true, i had a rant about struggling to find an honest and experienced non dealer buyer for my beautiful perfectly healthy young mare and there were a few random susgestions of pts! But on the other hand i have also got some very good and invaluble advice on here

Both plus a few more, think it might of bin chit chat and tack the other day with the video of the horse that was lame because it was unbalanced due to the exitment of loving its owner soooo much!

"chit chat and tack" is the worst I think, there's over 30 thousand members and 99% of posts end in slanging matches so any good advice gets lost.

Someone have a look on cit chat and tack and see if you can find the video of the bay horse running round a paddock in its rug and tell me if you think it looks lame. Ive just watched it again and to me it definatly looks off on front right. Its really bugging me if ive got it wrong or not now! Lol
