I'm doing some research for a project about horse racing, and am looking for some statistics along the lines of - numbers of horses that break down racing or in training each year, numbers of failed racehorses that go through the sales each year, the average costs to keep a horse in training for a year, numbers of people who attend big festivals like Cheltenham, Ascot etc, amounts spent betting etc.

Its just a small project, not doing anything really with it but I want to have some legitimate facts and figures behind it.

Don't want this thread to turn into a debate on the rights and wrongs of racing, just after some advice on where I can find this sort of information out - if anywhere.

Thanks!

Would be worth contacting the National Trainers Federation, they should have some, & the International Trainer magazine have some brilliant articles on all aspects of the industry, from injury to training styles & everything in the middle.

The britishhorseracing.com - British horse racing associtaion website publishes reorts on foal numbers/broodmares/ horses in training etc. Not sure you'll have much luck finding many of the stats you mention eg horses breaking down but you might find breakdowns on track and horses returned out of racing.
