Went for a hack in the drizzle which turned into lovely pouring rain today. Normally bump into at least 2 other horses but saw no-one. Am I the only person that rides in the rain or did anyone else brave the elements today? On the negative side me and my sodden joddies got stuck in a traffic jam on the M27 taking over an hour to get home. OH told me I stank of wet horse when I got home - pish I'm sure I smelt of roses after cooking in the car

It depends on the time of year. In winter I'm so pleased to have daylight to ride in I'd ride in almost any weather. In summer if she's had plenty of work over the previous few days i tend to skip it.

I've also become much more of a fairweather rider since I replaced my synthetic saddle with a very expensive barnsby.

No I took my youngster out on a hack with my friend and we got soaked. The fields and tracks were very slippy but if he is going to go hunting at some point he has to get used to what ever is thrown at him.

I'll ride whenever I'm given a chance, regardless of weather! (I'm getting over my fear of riding in the wind...) Poo-picking in the rain, however, is a different matter...

I am with you DWI. Although today I did get caught in it - in my nice new leather dressage saddle. Speaking of which - what is the best thing to do now - dry it off and then oil it? I am terrified of it getting ruined. The old synthetic did have its uses and the daft thing is I kept it for days like today but as my new saddle is less than a month old I cannot bear not riding in it lol

If I want to ride I will ride any weather, dark or light, wet windy snowy frosty icy, depends on how much he has been ridden in that week, we only got back from holiday yesterday, he was ridden 7 days on the go and some rides pretty hard work, so I didn't think it necessary to bother riding today with the crap rain all day, gonna ride tommorow, weather forecast better.

We need a we'll ride in anything clique haha! Glad I'm not the only one, my horse's owner thought I was insane. Horses are turned out in wind and rain so I don't think they care. If anything its good to get them used to all grounds and doing work in all weathers. Plus it gives us riders a good excuse for a nice hot lavendar bath and a glass of wine when we return home

My fellow liveries thought I was mad this winter, heading out in the rain and ice and wind and dark...but I'd rather be on a horse than not on a horse! If I waited for the weather to be good, I'd never ride!

Though I'm discovering that in the summer, I'm more inclined to wait a while to see if it clears up.

i'm proud to say i rode when it was mildly spitting today!

as a self confesses fair weather rider i did suprise myself!! And also sat out in the pouring rain at lunch time videoing a friends lesson.

Agree with above, riding in summer rain is very different to winter rain and poo picking is NEVER fun when its raining. in fact poo picking is not fun in any weather IMO!!

Fair weather horse!!!

He's at the gate demanding to be in if it so much as looks like raining and has the most massive strop if you attempt to ride in it.

According to him, it never rained in Australia or Hong Kong (!!!), and at 18 I doubt he's going to change.

I don't mind, I hate getting wet

In the winter I have to exercise the horses everyday whatever the weather as they are stabled so much, but during the summer I try to avoid the hideous elements!! Trouble is when its a lovely hot sunny day - the horse flies are out in force and that ruins a ride anyway!! - you can't win!

Today I was hunting, it was pouring with rain and foggy - anyone would think it was November

I would go out in drizzle but I don't ride in the all out rain unless I really have to (eg she has had more than 2 days off previously!) I used to ride in all weather, all year round at least 6 days a week, often 7. I did it for 10 years..I'm not retired from competitive riding at the ripe age of 26

I enjoy being a so caled fair weather rider, nothing to be ashamed of IMO.
